Honda's Ambitious Plan For Green Cars

Autonews reports that by the end of the next decade, the automaker is planning to increase its alternative-powered car sales in the United States, from both the Honda and Acura brands, to more than two-thirds.

What this means is that American Honda Motor Co. is targeting more than 1 million hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fuel cell vehicles and EVs, a very ambitious plan, considering that the company delivered just 2,329 hybrid cars through June, 2016, in the US.

However, the manufacturer that brought the first hybrid to this side of the pond in 1999 - the Insight, now has just four electric models in its lineup - the CR-Z, which will be discontinued soon, RLX, Accord Hybrid and NSX. These will be joined by the new Clarity FCV this year and, according to the same Hachigo, the lineup will continue with the arrival of a new PHEV sedan next year, and possible hybrid versions of the Civic and CR-V, by the end of 2020.

In addition to the US market, Honda is also planning to increase its global hybrid and electric vehicle sales to approximately two-thirds of total deliveries, by 2030.

The 2017 Honda Clarity has the best range rating of any electric vehicle that lacks an internal combustion engine, in the United States. It is a fuel cell vehicle which returns the petrol equivalent of 68 mpg (3.46 lt/100 km) combined, which translates into an EPA driving range of 366 miles (589 km) on a full tank of hydrogen.

"Not only does the Clarity Fuel Cell fit five passengers and refuel in three to five minutes, it offers customers a driving range on par with gasoline-powered cars. There is a growing network of hydrogen stations and fast fueling time, the zero-emissions family road trip is no longer science fiction", said American Honda's VP of the Environmental Business Development Office, Steve Center.

With a fuel cell and integrated powertrain almost the same size with a V6 engine, fitted entirely under the hood and thus allowing for a more spacious cabin, the Honda Clarity will arrive at selected California dealerships by the end of this year.

The car company has yet to release the official pricing details for the hydrogen-powered sedan, or the output numbers for that matter, but the North American version is expected to cost roughly $60,000 and it should be similar to the Japanese one, which uses a 174 horsepower electric motor and has a fuel stack capacity of 100 kW.

They need to pick a better color. The bright green they have on the Civic doesn't look as good in person.

They need to make them look good.....

The Clarity is ok just in the front. Ugly for pretty much the rest of the car. Accord hydrid looks a bit funky in the front as well.
