Honda Motor Co. plans to recall 273,000 Honda and Acura vehicles from 2001-2003 because of an airbag problem.

It will also inspect an additional 603,000 vehicles to see if the same defective parts that cause the problem were sold to repair autos that have been in accidents. Honda said it doesn’t know how many of those vehicles might have been repaired with the defective parts.

In the recalled vehicles, the driver’s side airbag can deploy with too much force in an accident, causing a metal inflator casing -- the part that holds and channels explosive propellant -- to rupture.

“The propellant was packed improperly and that allows the propellant to burn off too quickly and it explodes and pieces of the casing are causing the injuries,” said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman. The airbag inflator was manufactured by parts supplier Takata in Japan.

Honda has had four previous recalls dealing the same issue, which with this latest expansion includes more than 2.5 million vehicles in the U.S. The problem does not affect any vehicles newer than the 2003 model year.

Altogether, there have been 18 injuries and two deaths caused by the faulty airbags.
Honda expanded the recall after learning of a driver who was injured in a vehicle not included in its previous actions. It also is concerned that people are still driving unrepaired vehicles listed in previous recalls.

“We really need to get all these cars repaired and there are a lot of customers out there who have not brought their cars in after we have sent them mailers,” Martin said. “This is a very serious thing; people need to get their cars fixed. This is not something to wait on.”

The latest recall now includes certain 2001 and 2002 Accord, 2001 to 2003 Civic, 2001 to 2003 Odyssey, 2002 and 2003 CR-V, 2003 Pilot, 2002 and 2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL vehicles. Honda will begin sending recall notices to owners of these vehicles later this month.

It also said the Honda owners can go to www.recalls.honda.com or call (800) 999-1009 and select option 4; Acura owners can go to www.recalls.acura.com or call (800) 382-2238 and select option 4 to get more information.

yea, more info on it -

This latest expansion of the recall is necessary because Honda still hasn't found all the defective parts, with 640 of the inflators still unaccounted for. Some were sold as service parts, meaning that their whereabouts cannot be easily traced.

"Because Honda is unable to determine the specific vehicles that may have received the affected service parts through existing information," said Honda's statement, "Honda will inspect an additional approximately 603,000 vehicles and replace those parts as necessary."

Safety Recall (expansion): 2001-03 Driver’s Airbag Inflator Module (12-02-2011)

Subject: Safety Recall (expansion): 2001-03 Driver’s Airbag Inflator Module

On December 1, 2011, Honda Canada notified Transport Canada of an expansion to a voluntary Safety Recall of certain 2001 through 2003 model-year Honda and Acura vehicles to replace the driver’s airbag inflator in approximately 27,000 vehicles. Separately, Honda has also determined that 45 additional Canadian vehicles have had affected service parts installed in the process of a collision repair or other vehicle service and these will be included as part of this recall.

Description of Problem:
A manufacturing error can produce over-pressurization of the driver’s airbag inflator during airbag deployment. If an affected airbag deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, possibly causing injury to vehicle occupants.

Honda Canada Inc. issued a recall in November 2008 (subsequently expanded in July 2009 and Feb 2010) to replace the driver airbag inflator of certain 2001-03 Honda Accords, Civics, CR-Vs, Odysseys, and certain 2001-03 Acura ELs, TLs and CLs. Further investigation revealed that an additional 27,000 vehicles built for the Canadian market were assembled with affected airbags. This recall expansion covers the vehicles implicated by the latest finding.

In the U.S., approximately 882,000 additional vehicles will be recalled as part of this expansion. The exact number of affected vehicles is still under investigation.

There has been no reported incident related to this issue in Canada. There have been 19 reported incidents in the U.S. and 1 incident in Mexico.

Affected Units:
Total (North America): ~910,000 units (under investigation)
Canada: ~27,000 units

Repair Procedure:
Service Bulletins will be posted on eBiz shortly. Dealers will be notified through eBiz when the Service Bulletin is available. Vehicles will be inspected and if an affected part is identified, the inflator will be replaced at no charge to the customer.

Note: This campaign will be displayed when a VIN status inquiry is performed on affected units on or before December 5. Dealers can arrange to have customers bring their vehicle in for repair after the Service Bulletin has been published.

Parts:
The driver’s airbag inflator kit, 04770-S5A-308, is in stock.

always kind of wondered how that works. Does honda get some type of compensation for checking 1 million cars, over a defective part from Takata? Like, does Takata compensate Honda for their issues, or Honda eats it entirely, and just doesn't do business with them again, or

Takata would only be liable if Honda can show them their inflators do not meet the originally agreed to specifications. If so, then Takata would be on the hook for any costs incurred by Honda. If Takata wants to stay in business, they would have to compensate Honda.

well it sounds like only certain ones are failing, so I'd assume they can prove which ones were produced incorrectly. That sucks,..& has to be frustrating because it hurts the brand.
