Virginia Tech says a police officer has been shot and a possible second victim has been reported at a parking lot near the campus, where 32 students and faculty died in a 2007 rampage that was the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Authorities are seeking a suspect. A campus-wide alert tells students and faculty to stay inside and lock doors.
A law enforcement official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, said initial reports indicated that the shooting occurred following a traffic stop.

The suspect is described as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, gray hat with neon green brim, maroon hoodie and backpack.
The shooting comes the same day as Virginia Tech is appealing a $55,000 fine by the Education Department in connection with the university's response to a 2007 rampage that left 33 people dead.

A message left with the university wasn't immediately returned. Campus police referred all questions to the university.
A student gunman killed 32 students and faculty and then shot himself on the campus in 2007.

"This was a traffic stop on campus," Williams said. "It was not someone walking around firing shots."

Shots fired at Virginia Tech; officer reported shot

Thu Dec 8, 2011 12:58 PM EST

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- A police officer was shot at Virginia Tech on Thursday morning and campus officials warned everyone to seek shelter while an armed suspect was at large.

The campus newspaper and a local television station reported the officer was dead.

A possible second victim was reported at a campus parking lot, CBS television station WDBJ reported.

"We don’t know if the suspect fled or the extent of the injuries to the suspect or to the officer," NBC News’ Pete Williams told msnbc cable TV earlier.

"This was a traffic stop on campus," Williams said. "It was not someone walking around firing shots."

A Virginia Tech alert described the suspected shooter as a white male wearing gray sweat pants, a gray hat with a neon green brim and a maroon hoodie, and carrying a backpack.

A Virginia Tech alert posted on the school's website said the suspect was last seen walking toward McComas Hall, which is the main gym on campus, about two blocks from Lane Stadium.

In the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, 33 people, including the mentally ill gunman, were killed on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007. The massacre in a classroom building began at 9:40 a.m. when Seung-Hui Cho chained the doors and killed dozens before committing suicide.

Multiple victims in new Va. Tech shooting; gunman still at large

1:37 pm December 8, 2011

I just pulled the above update off the website of Virginia Tech, which four years ago was the site of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, with 32 people killed. Given that history, you have to believe that campus police there have a very muscular plan in place to deal with such situations.

Some Georgia legislators, backed by a group of students at Georgia Tech, believe that the answer to such crisis is to let students keep and carry guns on campus, and have once again begun lobbying for a bill that would allow students to carry firearms on the state’s college campuses. University officials, alarmed at the notion of untrained students firing wildly, and of the volatile mixture of college kids, alcohol and firearms within easy reach, continue to reject the notion.

I know we all hope that the Virginia Tech case is resolved quickly. But I suspect you’re going to hear echoes of this latest Va. Tech incident for months here in Georgia.

i was at the gym (not mccomas) when i saw 3 montgomery county sherriffs fly by up prices fork road towards main street running full lights and siren around 12:40. Made me wonder what was going on, walked back to my apartment to find all of the VT-Alert texts and emails on my phone

Update: Shooter's status remains unknown; visitors advised to stay away from campus
(Posted: 2:20 p.m.)
Numerous reports have been made recently of sounds identified as gunshots and suspicious activity on campus. These recent reports have been investigated and are unfounded. The suspect's status remains unknown. Several law enforcement agencies are on scene to assist. Please stay where you are and secure your surroundings.

I would imagine the police car has video footage - so they'd be able to check his car from the traffic stop and get his car info, no? They'd have license plate info, and all that kind of information to track the person down
