Honda has something wicked up its sleeve, based on the latest batch of spy photos we've received. This is purportedly the next Honda Civic Type-R, out testing in Germany and on the Nürburgring. The last generation of the Type-R went out of production in Europe in 2010, and while we admired it from afar, it's 2.0-liter, four-cylinder produced similar figures to the American-market Honda Civic Si.

From the looks of both it and the cars Honda engineers are benchmarking, the next Type-R will be much more powerful. In the spy photos, we can see four meaty exhaust pipes along with what is quite clearly an intercooler hiding behind the rear bumper. That's right, the next Type-R will be turbocharged. It'll need to be, though, if it's meant to tackle cars like the Opel Astra OPC, Ford Focus RS500 and Renault Megane RS Trophy (not pictured, but there according to our spies).

300 horsepower from a 2.0-liter engine should be on offer, and would match the competition quite well. Other obvious tweaks from the ho-hum five-door Civic are mainly aerodynamic. It sports an aggressive body kit with a meaty chin spoiler, rocker panels and a big rear wing. Red Brembo brake calipers can also be seen behind the sporty wheels and low-profile tires.

We'd expect the Civic Type-R to arrive in showrooms sometime in 2014, making a debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show a long shot. Geneva seems like the more likely locale for an unveiling.

they have a 1.6l turbo racing engine developed that they could work from maybe?
New 1.6 Liter Turbo Engine Developed By Honda For WTCC

The bad news is that this 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine with direct injection technology was designed to be used only for the Civic that will compete in the FIA World Touring Car Championship. The engine codenamed HR412E was developed at Honda’s R&D center in Tochigi, Japan and has already been delivered to the Honda Racing Team JAS workshop in Milan, Italy, where the Civic WTCC is being developed, successfully passing all initial tests.

"We believe the innovations that have led to this revolutionary engine will also lead to benefits beyond the race track, helping us to further increase the efficiency of our road car engines," commented Daisuke Horiuchi, WTCC Development Project Leader at Honda R&D.

Horiuchi did not elaborate further, and in particular, whether the Japanese company has any plans for a production turbocharged petrol engine. Honda said it would field one Civic at this season's WTCC driven by ex-Formula One driver Tiago Monteiro, who will compete in three races, starting at Suzuka in October 2012.

It may make more sense using something with larger displacement though.

If the SI stateside, starts at 23k, 25k for the navi equip. That means the "type R" will have to be well over 30k. That is a lot of money for a Civic.

I would guess between $45k to $50k for the reason that the FD2 Type-R could have easily been a $40k car here in the US.

Eh I would have bought it, instead of my Si. I'm sure it has more creature comfort than our Civics. Europe and Japan always get the cool interior stuff (but europe usually gets a lame engine).

Cool video, editing sucked a little. Exhaust sound ran into each other making it sound like a video game or an automatic transmission haha

It should be at least a 2lt turbo but, I WANT ONE!!!!!! Looks like I'm moving to another country in a year and a half! Lol
