I think it depend on the taste and budget of individual. However, certainly I like to have aftermarket wheels that not only boost the performance but enhance overall look of our vehicle too. See its fine example on iautobodyparts.com, as you can easily evaluate the difference between O.E.M and aftermarket wheels since they come with huge variety and design.
 
Even different OEM wheels can look good and have a performance aspect and cost you a fortune, I have 05 TL wheels powdercoated white on my car they look good and I can run 225/45/17 tires

I paid 350 for all 4, that included stripping the old paint (previous over painted them white) and fixing a ton of curb rash
