Mugen May Sell 2.2-Liter Honda Civic Type R with 256 HP

Honda tuner Mugen launched a limited-edition version of the Honda Civic Type R in the U.K. back in 2010. The modified car produced 240 hp, and just 20 copies were built. Of those, four remain unsold, so Mugen is considering upfitting those remaining examples with a 2.2-liter engine good for 256 hp.

With the past Mugen-fettled Civic Type R, the tuning company gifted the car’s 2.0-liter inline-four engine with new camshafts, pistons, and a remapped engine computer, resulting in an increase from factory ratings of 198 hp and 142 lb-ft of torque, to 240 hp and 153 lb-ft. In addition to the engine upgrades, Mugen fitted stickier tires, better brakes, stiffer springs and dampers, and sporty Recaro seats. Only 16 of the 20 Mugen cars built have been sold — which is a big surprise given how alluring the package sounds.

Now Mugenis considering outfitting those four remaining cars with a new version of the engine, which has been stroked to displace 2.2 liters and now produces about 256 hp. In addition to helping draw buyers for the unsold cars, the new engine allegedly pays homage to the Civic Type R’s erstwhile K20 2.0-liter engine. Mugen has modified over 400 copies of the K20 engine for use in road racing, rally, and street cars, but the K20 is no longer in production in Japan.

“We may never see the like of the K20 in a mainstream production car again, so felt it only fitting we mark the occasion with this special 2.2 version of the Honda Civic Type R,” said Mugen Europe vice president Hiro Toyoda.

So far, Mugen has yet to make a firm decision on whether it will actually turn the aforementioned Type R quartet into 2.2-liter hot hatches. The company may also offer an upgrade pack whereby owners of the prior Mugen Type R can have their cars upgraded to the 2.2-liter engine. If you live in the U.K., we’d recommend saving your pennies now to buy one of the upgraded cars.

I just looked up the cost of the limited 20 cars mugen built -

$38,599.00 euro
-> converts to $53,571.55 US dollars. :spazface:

That may explain why 4 didn't sell? Imagine the price tag on the remaining 4? :turbospin:

Jeebus, that's a lot. Could only justify spending that much on an RR.
 
There are a lot of cars for $50K+ I'd rather have. Unless you're just stuffing the thing in a warehouse in hopes for appreciation some day? I don't know how you could justify the price. There are 8th members who've put like 10k into their cars with way more hp/tq etc
 
50K? That's absurd. Mugen is way overpriced fanboy stuff at this point. Besides... look at that spoiler :bleh:
 
it is on the small-ish side. We could get you a larger one surely
 
it's there so you're never quite sure if a cop is behind you or not. You can't make out the light rack on the top of the cruiser because there are too many spoilers
 
I'd pay 50K for that. Add the Mugen logo on the windshield fluid nozzles and make it 75K.
 
you don't want the fluid nozzles to have LED lights?
 
And when the new model euro civic arrives, Mugen will make a Type-R pushing 290hp what will sell for 50k euros. Lol.
