I curious who holds the button while shifting?
And.... who lets it click?

You can post to give your reason for doing it the way you do.
I have some reasons for myself, but didn't want to bias the poll.
Glad to discuss after we get some votes.

I believe it's purely a safety feature for park/reverse. Like, you cannot access those without the button to avoid accidentally bumping it into reverse. The drive gears have no issue if you change without the button. (From what I recall)

Perhpas edit the poll to include an option that says "I have a stick." Those of us who cannot vote otherwise are not able to see the results... :(

I hold the button when going in both directions. I let it click when I first got it, but the sound it makes seems like it would fail early if I did it continuously. Now I just hold it whenever I move the selector.

Good point.... Of course they don't need to see the results........ :D

That's the same reasons I started holding it, It just took me 9k miles to realize it.......... :D Plus just having to hear it started wearing on me.......

Good point to bring up for an FYI.
Also I'm pretty sure it won't go into reverse even if holding the button while moving forward............ BUT.......... I've never tried it to see ........ It's like the ppl that see a wet paint sign and have to touch it.......... Never check the reverse avoidance system.........

Done some experiments with this: The selector will move, but the car will not respond until the speed is appropriate. For example, at any appreciable speeds, putting into reverse will not do anything as the transmission electrionics will detect an unsafe request. Another case is high speed in drive, if you slam it into '1' or '2' it will wait until you slow down so that the RPMs will not go above ~4500 RPM or so. (Had to try it, going to be an engineer someday  )

I think I honestly drove automatic less then 10 times in my life, so cannot comment too much. Only drove automatic when driving moving trucks for me and friends or some test drives either wise I stay away.
I did notice though that the rental trucks do not have that button since the gear changer is on the wheel. Wondering why they do not need it for parking.

When i did drive automatic I do not think I ever pressed that button unless it refused to get where I wanted it to go. I think for 1 ,2 and 3 while driving you have to press it but never tried it.

From driving semi's and never owning a automatic before, I did pretty much the same thing, until it just sounded and is smoother better keeping the button down while shifting after I got to the point I didn't need the click guide. I always come to a complete stop when shifting from one direction to the other.... Straight or automatic........

I hold it. I don't like how you don't have to press it in to move the shifter once its out of park though. I had a inebriated passenger accidentally knock my accord into N from D while we were on the highway once. They were just getting comfortable for the ride home.... all 5 minutes of it.

when on the column it is not straight forward or backwards like cars you have to pull it towards you before you can put it down in gear
