BMW Confirms 5-series Hybrid for March Arrival in the United States

When it comes to hybrids, BMW doesn't take the understated route, cranking up the power and loading eco technologies into some of its most decadent models. The 7-series, the X6--they will never be mistaken for a Toyota Prius. But now comes the mean and green version of the 5-series, called the ActiveHybrid 5, and the Bavarian luxury maker confirmed late Thursday that the car will arrive in U.S. showrooms in March.

Arrive is probably underselling it, as the 5-series hybrid will pack a total of 335 hp and sprint to 60 mph in a rather brisk 5.7 seconds--considering​ all of the eco hardware strapped to the full-size sedan. Power comes from BMW's tried-and-true turbo straight six-cylinder, which works with a lithium-ion battery and an eight-speed automatic transmission with stop/start technology. It can drive on electric power at speeds of up to 37 mph with a range of 2.5 miles.

The battery pack can be charged during braking or periods of coasting, and the electric motor can also add boost during acceleration.

The car rolls on standard 5-series underpinnings with adjustable damping settings and rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels.

you think bmw will ever change their heater/radio controls -....vents... Seems like they've basically been that same design for a century. I can't see a ton from the photo, but they look really similar, if not the same

I agree. I've also noticed that some aspects of the dash receive more drastic changes over the years than others. The vents/controls have been overlooked.
