Well it officially comes out in 30 mins. My local Game Stop is slammed. Drove by around 6p and the surrounding parking lots were all full. It looked like there was a least a full block length of people waiting to get in at midnight. I love this video game series but I'm not waiting in that line for that long!!!

Here is the funny new commercial for MW3.

Someone made a prediction of 700 million in sales for the first 24hrs, and 1 billion+ sales in the first week. Could be interesting.

It took 6 weeks for Black Ops to hit a billion in sales. I think they may have put the bar a bit high, but we'll see

I think will all the promoting Battlefield 3 did a lot of people bought that game. However, the loyal COD fans will be out in the millions to pick this up but I think those numbers are a little high. It may break a billion in around a month but we'll just have to wait and see.

Amazon has said the latest Call Of Duty is it's best-selling video game pre-order of all-time.

black ops sold 26+ million copies worldwide to date

reports claim 5+ million copies of Battlefield 3 sold in the first week

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Demolishes Sales Records

Modern Warfare 3, Activision’s latest first-person shooter, hit store shelves like a runaway train. The game, part of theCall of Duty franchise, was predicted to be the top-selling video game despite healthy competition from EA’sBattlefield 3 released in October.

Those predictions are not just coming true, they’re being demolished. Several sources have claimed that Modern Warfare 3is on par to break first week sales records — a title it would claim from its own predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops released by Activision in 2010. This, after MW3 already broke records for pre-ordered copies, according Activision.

On opening night, Activision says that approximately 1.5 million gamers lined up outside 13,000 stores to buy a copy at midnight, reported Extreme Tech. We’re not entirely sure how Activision got that number, and those gamers didn’t all necessary translate into sales. However, analysts have prediction sales that trump even those numbers. One analyst told Extreme Tech that 18 million copies will be sold by the start of the calendar year.

The site even did some quick math and found the amount of electricity used by online players was equal to or more than enough energy to power a nuclear power station.
Black Opsholds the current record for the entertainment industry’s five-day opening sales revenue record at $650 million worldwide, theGuardian reported. While hard numbers haven’t yet come in for MW3, Amazon said it generated 32% more pre-orders thanBlack Ops.

Celebrated games analyst Michael Pachter predicted the game will not only beat the old record but continue selling through the holiday season: “I see compression of sales for virtually every game, would bet that they are 10% higher over the same time frame, so $1.1 billion in the first six weeks,” Pachter told Industry Gamers.

so they're claiming over 600 million dollars in 1 day of sales... :bleh:

‘Modern Warfare 3′ sets day-one entertainment record

It's a three-peat.

Modern Warfare 3, the latest installment in Activision's juggernaut shooter franchise, has set a new entertainment industry record for the biggest product launch of all time, selling 6.5 million copies in the U.S. and U.K. in its first 24 hours and earning $400 million in the process.

That tops the $360 million Call of Duty: Black Ops made last year in its first 24 hours and the $310 million Modern Warfare 2 took in during its first day in 2009.

"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row."

Kotick also points out that overall sales for the Call of Duty franchise now "exceed worldwide theatrical box office for 'Star Wars' and 'Lord of the Rings,' two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Analysts expect Modern Warfare 3 to sell nearly 20 million units by the end of the calendar year, generating roughly $1.2 billion in revenue. Black Ops cracked the $1 billion mark in six months.

Pre-orders for the game were also the biggest on record, and given that the last two installments of Modern Warfare previously held the launch record, this achievement isn't exactly a shocking one.

It's still notable, though, given the competition Modern Warfare 3 faces this year from EA's Battlefield 3, which sold 5 million copies in its first week. Some also thought Call of Duty's numbers could be hampered by lingering negative feeling among core gamers following the abrupt dismissal of series creators Jason West and Vince Zampella after the release of Modern Warfare 2.

Both factors put Modern Warfare 3 under the microscope, but the success of the game certainly backs up what analysts have been saying all along: Most players are more concerned about the game, rather than the developers behind it. And with so many people buying a copy, even those who held a grudge or resented the game because of its success, still purchased (and will likely purchase) the game so they can play with the people on their friends list.

"Call of Duty is more than a game," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "It's become a major part of the pop cultural landscape. It is a game that core enthusiasts love, but that also consistently draws new people into the medium."
Activision also announced that they've donated $3 million of the game's sales to the Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit corporation that seeks to provide job placement and training for veterans.

I can't believe how video games have changed over the years. My first console was the Atari 2600. My uncle gave it to my brother and I. Shortly after that we got an NES.

I miss it...

Jason West and Vince Zampella are suing Activision -

LOS ANGELES, March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- O'Melveny & Myers LLP today filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court a lawsuit against Activision Publishing, Inc., on behalf of video game developers Jason West and Vince Zampella. West and Zampella developed two of the most successful videogames in history – Call of Duty and Modern Warfare – at the Infinity Ward studio, a company they co-founded in 2001. After its acquisition by Activision in November 2003, West and Zampella served as president/game director and CEO, respectively. Activision terminated their employment weeks before they were to be paid substantial royalty payments as part of their existing contracts for Modern Warfare 2.

"Activision has refused to honor the terms of its agreements and is intentionally flouting the fundamental public policy of this State (California) that employers must pay their employees what they have rightfully earned," said their attorney Robert Schwartz. "Instead of thanking, lauding, or just plain paying Jason and Vince for giving Activision the most successful entertainment product ever offered to the public, last month Activision hired lawyers to conduct a pretextual 'investigation' into unstated and unsubstantiated charges of 'insubordination' and 'breach of fiduciary duty,' which then became the grounds for their termination on Monday, March 1st."

"We were shocked by Activision's decision to terminate our contract," said West. "We poured our heart and soul into that company, building not only a world class development studio, but assembling a team we've been proud to work with for nearly a decade. We think the work we've done speaks for itself."
Zampella added, "After all we have given to Activision, we shouldn't have to sue to get paid."

Modern Warfare 2 is arguably one of the most successful games in history and together with Call of Duty, has generated more than $3 billion in sales for Activision. In addition, Activision seized control of the Infinity Ward studio, to which Activision had previously granted creative control over all Modern Warfare-branded games. The suit was filed to vindicate the rights of West and Zampella to be paid the compensation they have earned, as well as the contractual rights Activision granted to West and Zampella to control Modern Warfare-branded games.

The suit includes claims for breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, wrong termination in violation of public policy, and declaratory relief.

a court date has finally been set: May 7th, 2012.
The ex-heads Jason West and Vince Zampella have set up their own development company, Respawn Entertainment, in the time since the initial fallout. They're currently working on their first game.

Quite where the chips will fall on this one is unknown at this stage. It's still possible that an out of court settlement will be reached but if it isn't, Activision could find themselves in an unwinnable position. Perhaps.

Activision got the bargain of the century in 2002 when it paid a total of $5 million to buy Infinity Ward, a cash-strapped game studio. Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty series has since gone on to generate more than $3 billion in revenues for Activision.

Those details, included in a lawsuit filed by two Infinity Ward co-founders yesterday, get at the root of the dispute over who gets credit and compensation ($36 million worth) for the creation of what has become the world’s most successful game franchise.

Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired by Activision Monday for alleged insubordination and breach of contract. But the two allege that Activision trumped up the charges on false pretenses and then fired them before they were to due to receive large royalty checks for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which sold more than 15 million copies since November. Their prior game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, sold 13 million copies.

Buying Infinity Ward for that paltry price was a great and shrewd deal for Activision at the time. But the question is, did the company then share enough of the revenue with its key employees. Clearly, from the point of view of West and Zampella, Activision, now Activision Blizzard, was stingy.

Modern Warfare 3 sells record $775 million in 5 days

Modern Warfare 3, the latest game title in the Call of Duty franchise from Activision, has set a new sales record, selling more than $775 million worth of copies in the first five days. Not only does this figure crush rival EA’s Battlefield 3, which had set a record of its own, but it has also managed to outsell all entertainment records including major movie titles.
