Col Gaddafi killed: hunt for IRA suppliers must go on

Relatives of the victims of IRA atrocities last night called for Muammar Gaddafi’s henchmen to still be rounded up and brought to account for supplying the terrorists with explosives and guns.

Since taking power in 1969, Gaddafi supported terrorists around the world to cause maximum harm to his opponents

Libya was instrumental is equipping the IRA throughout the 1970s and 80s including, crucially, several tons of Semtex – the plastic explosive that transformed the effectiveness of the dissident republicans.

Even last month there were claims the Gaddafi regime had supplied funding to current dissident groups such as the Real IRA or others, shortly before he was forced from power.

In the immediate aftermath of Gaddafi’s death yesterday, those most affected by his actions said the hunt for those responsible must continue.

Victor Barker, whose son 12-year-old son James died in the Omagh bombing in 1998, said: “They should be pursued just like Gaddafi was.

“They were responsible for supplying the Semtex and munitions that has now armed the Real IRA.

“Gaddafi was an incredibly two faced and self-centred for most of his life and the people of Libya can now get some kind of life back.”

David Cameron, the Prime Minister said: "I think today is a day to remember all of Colonel Gaddafi's victims, from those who died in connection with the Pan Am flight over Lockerbie, to Yvonne Fletcher in a London street, and obviously all the victims of IRA terrorism who died through their use of Libyan Semtex."

Since taking power in 1969, Gaddafi supported terrorists around the world to cause maximum harm to his opponents.

As early as 1973, he agreed to ship arms and ammunition to the IRA to attack British interests indirectly.

Libya also shipped about 150 tons of weapons, including several tons of Semtex, to the IRA in the 1980s.

Libyan intelligence officers had bought the Semtex from Czechoslovakia in the early 1980s and it was used as the charge or in the detonator of every major IRA bomb after 1986, including atrocities in Omagh, Enniskillen, Manchester, Warrington and Canary Wharf.

Lawyers for their victims have long campaigned for Libya to pay compensation and accept its responsibility.

The National Transitional Council is understood to have previously agreed a compensation deal and it is hoped Gaddafi’s death will now speed that process up.

DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson said: “I don't think anybody will be comforted but there will be widespread relief that this has happened and that we finally see an end to his evil regime.

"This now clears the way for what we hope will be the conclusion of our negotiations with the new government to settle the legal claims.”

I would imagine there are a lot of ecstatic people right now after all of the protests/fighting

they showed the video of his body on the news tonight

Yeah, it was crazy. Showed him still alive but badly hurt being held up in front of a truck. Then they dropped him to the ground and started beating him with their shoes. He was shot in the stomach and then a final kill shot to the head. The pic from the ambulance were clear, closeup, and pretty freaky!
