WHITE PLAINS — In what was described as a "brazen," but brainless crime, four guys and a gal are charged with the armed robbery of the newly opened Five Guys Burgers & Fries restaurant early this morning.
Cops were called to the eatery, which opened last week at 240 Main St., shortly after midnight on a report of three men wearing rubberized gloves with bandanas covering their faces demanding the day's receipts from the manager. One of the stickup men brandished a revolver. The men fled after taking an undetermined amount of cash.
Investigators immediately reviewed video of the incident and quickly broadcast a description of the trio, who were stopped a few blocks away in about the time it takes to eat a hamburger. Timothy Crawford, 26, of 25 Mitchell Place, who works as a cook at the restaurant, was taken to Police Headquarters along with two other White Plains men: Anthony Bush, 24, of 27 Washington Place, and Marcus Beechum, 21, of 2 Beech St.
After questioning the three, police determined that two others were allegedly involved in the robbery. Ricardo St. Louis, 25, of 300 Gramatan Ave., Mount Vernon, was picked up in the downtown area a short time later. Lannay Wiggins, 25, also of 25 Mitchell Place, was arrested at her home.
Investigators recovered a loaded .44-caliber handgun, $3,700 and the clothes, masks and gloves believed to have been used in the stickup.
"It was a brazen, but not a very bright crime," Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said. "Anyone who frequents our downtown area during the evening hours can see our heavy police presence, which is there to prevent crime and disorder. In this case police responded rapidly and quickly apprehended these suspects and took a high-caliber gun off the streets."
The alleged hamburglars have been charged with felony counts of first-degree robbery and criminal use of a firearm, and fourth-degree conspiracy.
Police said the investigation is continuing and asked anyone with information to call detectives at 914-422-6223. Calls will be kept confidential.
