Honda part of compact-car sales surge
Concerns over high gasoline prices and the lingering effects of the Japan natural disasters have triggered a climb in sales of compact cars in United States, dominated by the companies that made best-selling midsize automobiles, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.
While General Motors Co.'s compact Chevrolet Cruze was the top-selling vehicle in the nation last month, smaller cars topped sales for Ford Motor Company, Hyundai Motor Company, and Honda Motor Company Ltd. For Honda, which bases its North American manufacturing headquarters in Marysville, the compact Civic won out over the Central Ohio-made midsize Accord.
Analysts say economic concerns aren't the only reasons customers are flocking to smaller vehicles – it's quality as well. One source called the recent wave of compacts “the best crop of cars we've ever seen coming out of this category.”
