(NewsCore) - A robber was nabbed by Indian police Wednesday after he returned to his victim's home and offered to swap stolen items for a cell phone he had accidentally left behind.
The crook burst into the house of Pazha Karuppaiah, a state politician, before ripping an expensive gold chain from his wife's neck, The Times of India reported.
Frightened Kamala Aachi, who was home alone at the property in Chennai, southeastern India, called the police.
But to her amazement, the first person to arrive on her doorstep was the bungling thief who had dropped his cell phone as the pair struggled.
He sheepishly proposed a bargain whereby the device would be swapped for the stolen chain but fled when police arrived moments later.
The alleged culprit -- named as A. Mubarak by the newspaper -- was quickly identified via the phone's address book and the photo of himself he used as a screensaver. Mubarak, 37, was arrested within an hour of the 9:00am local time raid and remains in custody, The Times said.
