TAURANGA, New Zealand - New Zealand police believe a pregnant woman conned officers into thinking she was in labor in order to evade arrest after a pursuit, the New Zealand Herald reported Tuesday.
The incident began when officers tried to pull over a speeding Honda Civic on a state highway near Tauranga, in the North Island, about 9:00am local time Monday.
After the male driver finally pulled to the side of the road, cops found a 23-year-old woman passenger in the vehicle with her feet spread out on the dashboard, who claimed to be giving birth. The woman was more than seven months pregnant, police said.
The officers called for an ambulance and she was rushed to the Tauranga Hospital. However a short time later she discharged herself and fled in a car that was waiting for her, leading to police to think they might have been tricked.
"I think she's tried using her pregnancy to put a smokescreen to give some justification for the driver's actions," Acting Senior Sergeant Mark Holmes said.
"It's just disappointing that someone would use their condition like that to their advantage."
The driver of the car is to face serious driving charges.
