The number of celebrities and athletes who go broke at some point in their lives is truly astounding. A few years back, the NBA Players Association actually released a study that found 60% of its players were bankrupt within five years of retirement. I don't think there's any hard facts on the portion of musicians who suffer the same fate. I would estimate it's lower than that astronomical basketball figure but still way the hell higher than it should be. Here's a good example of why.
According to TMZ, Soulja Boy just purchased a thirty-five million dollar plane as a twenty-first birthday present to himself. Not content with the standard features, the rapper then poured twenty million dollars into the machine, outfitting it with a posh bathroom, custom floors and four separate bar areas.
For the sake of argument, let's say Soulja Boy paid for all of this in cash. I would be surprised if he had that much in liquid assets, but let's give him the benefit of the doubt. How much would his net worth need to be to justify this purchase? The answer is probably well over a billion dollars. If Bill Gates shelled out fifty-five million on a plane, I wouldn't even bother writing a story on it. He has the money. Soulja Boy does not. Even if he paid for this extravagant purchase in suitcases full of one hundred dollar bills mafia style, there's still no way his portfolio is vast enough to warrant spending this much on a pimped out plane.
I'm not opposed to buying frivolous items if you have the cash, just be smart about it.
