Subaru Deciding STI Fate This Week

Subaru is reportedly deciding whether the next generation STI will go towards a more upscale vehicle like a Mercedes AMG or BMW M series vehicle this week.

Regardless of which direction the model takes, odds are we can expect to see a turbocharged version of the new 2.0-liter dual-overhead cam boxer four-cylinder currently found in the Forester. Nick Senior, Subaru Australia Managing Director, has been quoted as saying the engine is compatible with forced inductions, countering earlier reports.

While Senior says he hopes the STI will continue to be a rally thoroughbred, his vote only counts for so much. Australia is the fourth-largest Subaru market behind the U.S., Japan and China.

If they go M series or AMG, how much higher do they plan to push the pricing????

I think making it upscale would be nice in a limited production run.....

To compete with the likes of M series or AMG? Maybe more luxury, but they'll have to squeeze the snot out of that 2L motor to get it into the same level of performance as those brands.

To compete with reliable hp, they couldn't use the 2.0. I would love to see their 6 cyl with some serious umph

don't think of it in terms of trying to match HP. Just "upscale"

What Subaru is doing is keeping the car lightweight. Sound deadening? nah, lots of speakers? nah. cockpit of plastic? yeppers

I dunno... if I was in the market for an M or AMG, Subaru STI wouldn't be on the possible list at all. Here I am looking to spend $80k or more, why consider an STI at $40k when it is not as awesome and is still a track car. These other two are plush and have stupid quiet smooth power.. the STI just isn't any of that.

They should keep the STi the way its been, Rally-bred tuner car. Maybe upgrade the materials they use and a better sound system and voila...more upscale IMO.

huge mistake going upscale, price it out of most people's reach like the Nissan Z and Mustang GT have steadily done in the past few years.

Don't care, I'll be happily sliding around in my BRZ, people can cry over the STI all they want....just sayin'
