There's really no excuse for giving another driver a brake check at highway speeds, no matter how annoyed you are at the car closely following you. That we're watching a sheriff give a brake check in this video just makes things worse.

The video shows driver Chad Walton in South Carolina following a North Carolina sheriff's Crown Vic fairly closely.

We don't know what happened before Walton turned on his camera phone, and we should take Walton's statements that the cop is holding up traffic and "acting like a real jackass in South Carolina" with a grain of salt.

Walton moves to the right and passes the cop and a Volvo. As he drives away, the sheriff speeds up, also passes on the right, then aggressively slows down in front of him.

"This is ******* bullshit!" Walton shouts, after hitting the cop's bumper.

WWAY3 News reports that after the crash, the deputy did not pull over, so Walton called 911. Walton told WWAY3 that North Charleston Police responded and found the officer at fault, though the deputy was not given a ticket.

It's not clear what caused this apparent road rage on the part of the sheriff, but that kind of behavior isn't good for any driver let alone someone who can arrest you.

North Carolina Cop Resigns After Brake Check Video Goes Viral

This morning we saw a North Carolina officer brake check a South Carolina driver into a rear-end collision. Now the officer has resigned, and claims he was baited into the crash.

The video shows Deputy Craig Culpepper of North Carolina's Onslow County Sheriff's department brake-checking South Carolina driver Chad Walton into a rear-end accident. In the video Culpepper is first seen blocking Walton in the left lane. Walton passes on the right, Culpepper catches up, passes on the right as well, and then aggressively brakes into Walton's bumper.

The officer was identified by WWAY3 News from the South Carolina accident report. Culpepper told WWAY3 that he was baited by Walton, who rode up behind him and flashed his lights at him before the beginning of the now-viral video, currently at 267,183 views.

"I fell for it hook, line and sinker," stated Culpepper.

WWAY3 reports that South Carolina police are familiar with Walton, who has a reputation among them for baiting cops into bad situations on video. Walton only has one video uploaded to YouTube, so we cannot see if he's had any other run-ins with the police.

While speaking with WWAY3, Culpepper stated that he chose to resign, even though Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown offered him the chance to stay on as a detention officer. He also pointed out that he is a father of four and was returning from a 40 hour K-9 training course at the time of the incident.

The Sheriff's office stated that the damage to Culpepper's cruiser would not cost more than $100 to fix. Culpepper said that he hoped his department would pay to repair Walton's truck, thought he amount of damage is unknown.

Culpepper told WWAY3 that he wished he could have told his side of the story before the video came out, while WWAY3 notes that his department did not take or return any of their numerous approaches for comment in the past day.

The cop could have pulled him over for breaking numerous laws in that vid, but he decided to brake check.

Not taking the cops side............ but the driver with the video is way of base....1st he's following at less than a sec. behind the cop(I don't do that to anyone much less a cop..... they can give tickets for that)...... 2nd the v-car passed on the right which can be illegal in some states( I don't know in this case, easy enough to look up)........ 3rd He could see that the cop was speeding up after the v-car went around on the right(both of them guilty of road-rage at this point).

Cops wrong but the v-car is an idiot for pushing the whole thing.......... They both should take the blame.
I just don't understand ppl that want to push their points with the police........ take it to court and argue it there. Of course you don't want your video to show you're following closer than 2 sec.

^ I agree, there is a bit more to the story than we see. Something must have gone down before the filming started. They both seem to be in the wrong. Sadly the cop as a representative of the law should have known better. If he had no jurisdiction I am sure he could have called the local cops and catch the guy if he did anything wrong.

I never like this concerned citizens videos where they go vigilante. Reminds of soviet times informers that reported neighbors for talking about the party... Not to mention they break some laws as well in progress of being the "perfect" citizens...

Ppl in the position of traffic enforcement should drive their vehicles "perfectly-to-the-book", with the exception of an emergency, and still be safe.
As a retired professional driver and "OCD" :D , I have driven to the letter of the law(with the exception of speed) most of my life(took some time to learn some of the particulars), but in the situation of road-rage, one needs to back off mentally asap or sooner, it creates a tunnel-vision effect, which leads to God knows what.
Same as going around a turn and watching a point that you're worried hitting instead of watching where you "want" to go.
