This is the first time I have ever decided to get windows on my car tinted. I don't know anything about it so need some advice. I have a 2012 coupe. I stopped by a local window tinting shop and they quoted me a price of $140 to tint all the windows except the windshield which would be illegal. I checked on line and found this info:

The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are:
  1. The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting.

The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions.
However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays.

I notice that the shop is tinting driver's and passenger's side windows. Are they able to do it since the 1999 admendment beats around the bush about ultraviolet rays? Should I go for it and how does the price sound?

it's illegal to do the fronts in california, but most shops will install it. They're not liable if you agree to have them install it. I've seen people even have full windshield tint in the past. Some people roll around with their car tinted all over without issue, and some will tell you they've been given tint tickets numerous times. I'd say a lot depends on your location and how picky the police are in your area. I've seen a couple members on here from california tint their front 2 windows like 35%, and then they did their back/rear glass at like 15-20%. The only way you can legally get away with tint on the front windows there is to have eye/vision issues, and a doctor notes that you need tinted windows.
