we have a single magnetic door to get in...so we have to get in near the shower head
otherwise I stay as far away from it as possible

Before you leave the shower after showering turn the head and find where to set it so the water won't hit you the next time you get in. then get in the next time and turn it on, repeat.

Neither, get in the bathtub turn on the faucet let it get warm then turn on the shower...

Our shower's head is directly above the centerline of the shower in the ceiling, i.e. it sort of rains directly down on you. The knob to turn it on/off is on the back wall of the shower if looking directly into the shower. It is a poor design because you have to reach through where the water would be to turn it on, I always get my arm shot with a cold blast of water in the morning

That's what I do with mine, but ours is a combo shower/bath...... I don't know what he's got but it sounds like shower only, so he wouldn't have our option.
