Towing with a 2012 SI?

With my '89 Accord ( 2.0L FI, 5 speed ) I regularly towed a utility trailer. The heaviest load I towed was about 2300 lbs in the trailer + the weight of the trailer. ( 489 pounds empty ) While I don't recommend anyone trying this, unless they really know what they are doing and are conscious of how to load it properly, it towed it just fine in 4th gear. Stopping distances are increased, and too little weight on the front tires can cause a serious safety issue. Engine temperature was never an issue, however the transaxle did get really warm.

With 1500 pounds total ( 1000 lbs in the trailer + trailer empty weight ) there weren't any issues, and it was much safer, albeit still over the recommended towing capacity. With the low profile popup tent trailer, it was not a problem to climb a 7% grade with the car, and still maintain speed.

I got mine through etrailer.com

Price/shipping was good and they have pretty detailed instructions and videos on their site for install.

Seeing this picture just made me feel better about my purchase this evening.

I just purchased a St.Martin f-13 boat, for an absolute steal, $800 with trailer, titles for boat & trailer!! Identical hull as the red one above (radar arch and windshield not currently on mine). I don't mind pulling the small amount of weight, the boat only weighs a little over 500lbs so 650lbs or so with the motor, I just don't think I can get over how the hitch looks. And there could be clearance issues with my exhaust. If all else fails my wife's corolla will do the job. Though it sure would look nice behind my taffy white coupe with red accents.

I'm just starting to read about my options to install a hitch. I already have the Progress sway bar. Will that need to be removed? @Nix

Nah, sway bar should be fine. I have a bolt on hitch on my car. 1 1/4" for bike racks and stuff. Be careful towing though. I think the cars are only rated for 800lbs.

I know this is an old thread but the SI has to have a greater towing capacity because of the torque-y engine and beefier transmission. I still can't fathom how a CVT tows anything.
