I drove a friend's week-old '13 Merc S550 4matic today. OMG. 4.6L, twin turbo, 419 hp and 516 ft/lbs torque beast. 7sp auto, paddle shifters. I don't doubt the 0-60 in 4.9 sec figure. I think that's conservative. It's even got a great snarl at idle. Wow.

You referring to a Merc-ury, or Merc-edes?

Top of the line mercedes fat ride. I've been eyeballing one in the area lately. Thought about taking it out, but haven't made up my mind. Beautiful automobile! Might wait to see if they update the style next year.

^^ "taking it out"...
as in test driving one, or showing the owner your taillights?

They're nice but I'd rather get a GTR or Z06 for that price. Too heavy and a lot of luxury instead of performance. GTR Power to weight 7, Z06 6 or less depending on model. S 550 10. something. And handling is always affected by the insane weight of the merc.

Luxury considered though it is a class of its own.

I've been on golf trips in this guy's '09 and '11 S550s to some cool courses, and the S550 is like a fishbowl. On the road, people look at it like its an exotic. Really surprised me. I hardly notice them on the road.

No. :police:

It's all about what you want. In this case, an S550 is all about comfort and luxury. Although respectful, the performance is secondary. For that, you'll need over $100K.

A Z06 is strictly about performance. Although not absolutely terrible, the comfort is secondary. For that, you can spend about $80K, but frankly, unless you're tracking the Z06, it's a waste to own one.

The best is to have one vehicle to provide performance and another for comfort.

For now either of those cars would be a stretch for me . . . as in out of reach :vtec:.

ken needs the 25x75' garage plans to be built

That's true, personally I want a car as close to performance I can buy, ideealy a a pure racer even if for daily driving and a comfortable non sport car for going out with the family. I would drive the performance one to work and everywhere I go on my own :) That's why I like the Si gives you a taste of some performance while being a very practical car. I would have to be very rich to pay for luxury, if I shell out my hard earned cash I don't mind if it is for performance, for luxury I feel like I throw it away.

I guess I am in a small crowd since the market does not serve the average joe with a need for a pure performance car at a low price, they always come either with a crazy price tag or with a mix of luxury and performance. I still haven't driven a car where rigidity, power and handling is all that matters despite comfort :) I think the Viper is one like that just never had the chance to drive one.

It is my personal preference nothing wrong with paying for luxury. I am sure I would like it myself if money was no issue :)

:) Same for me, I think there is a crowd for every car where they look for it and admire certain model. Personally I notice more than others the cars that I have owned before or still own, and the nice performance ones.

I read a study once where people in traffic tend to be nicer to cars similar to theirs, not an absolute but I think it is a real tendency we have :) Funny how the mind works.
