So has anyone noticed a lot of newer cars are doing the same design feature on rear bumpers? That small amount of black on the lower middle section. I'm curious as to where it originated from and why so many cars follow suit. Maybe it's just the trend with automakers but I started noticing it a few months back. Here's what I know so far, its not always found on all trim levels of a specific chasis. For example, civic Si coupe does have it, any non Si does not. Here's a couple examples of a few various cars. Let me know your thoughts on it :)

less to put through a paint process? I don't know where it started

I could see that. But my civic is gloss black so it still got painted.

I think they do it to break up the color

Good point.

My best guess is there is a really cool car (possibly a race car) that has influenced a lot of these automakers. It seems that they tend to put this new "split" bumper on the sportier trims. What do you guys think?

I haven't seen it close up in person... I just figured it was molded black plastic... not painted plastic

it's supposed to be reminiscent of the rear diffusers found on race cars and high end sports cars. in those cars the diffusers provide massive amounts of downforce (much more than any wing could provide). by being low in front and high towards the rear, the undertrays limit air flowing under the car at speed, and as that space opens up towards the rear, it works creates a vacuum that sucks the rear of the car towards the road.

Well that makes sense. Is that a Ferrari?
