Americans Drove Almost 30 Billion Fewer Miles In 2011 Versus Previous Years
Data from the Federal Highway Administration indicate Americans drove 29.8 billion fewer miles in the first nine months of this year, according to a report today in the Detroit News. If the trend continues – driving was reduced for the past seven months of 2011 – the year will be the lowest for U.S. miles driven since 1993.
The reduced driving – and, likely, a shift to more fuel-efficient new vehicles – means drivers in the United States are using 500,000 fewer barrels of oil each day. The federal agency’s determination of miles driven comes from a continuous hourly traffic count at 4,000 locations across the country. For the first nine months, total miles driven in the United States was 2.2 trillion, down 1.3 percent compared with last year.
