The underlying program uses a complex algorithm to determine theoretical grip, while wheel speed and spin sensors send data to the computers to interpret the exact amount of suspension load, power delivery and braking force necessary to keep it out of the weeds. A driver feedback display mounted on the center console shows drivers how close the car is to the optimal line while in control, but when Hal takes over, instructors or engineers can dial the speed up or down to suit conditions.

google is trying to get this working in vegas

Google is lobbying the state of Nevada to make the company's self-driving 'robot' cars legal on public roads.
Occupants would be allowed to text and talk on the phone while the car ferried them to wherever they needed to go. Previously, Google had been developing the cars in secret, testing them over 225,000 kilometres of driving in California.
Details on exactly what the cars would be used for are still unclear.
The project is still in the testing phase, but the bill is expected go up for a vote sometime before June.

in the one video about google, they mention being able to text or call on a cell while using the auto car - and that was from a year ago
 
You know what's scary? Autonomous cars. What's scarier? An autonomous car that can lap Laguna Seca at eight-tenths and post sub-two minute lap times all day long. BMW's 330i Track Trainer can do just that. And we have the video to prove it.

I saw an episode of Top Gear where this car was at their test track. Clarkson seemed like he was going to poo his pantalones riding in the drivers seat and letting the car do its thing..
 
I'd be a tad scared. I think anyone would be if it's going max out on a track. If it didn't turn properly, you're going to be having a bad day
 
Google gets driverless car law passed in Nevada


As it turns out dreams become real for the search giant quickly. The Nevada state legislature has just passed has just passed a bill, Assembly Bill No. 511, that does two things. First, the law allows the Nevada Department of Transportation to create rules and regulations regarding the use of self-driving cars, so that they can be used legally on the road. The second part of the law requires the Nevada state Department of Transportation to designate areas in which these vehicles can be tested.

The cars in question use a wide array of sensor, GPS technology and a little but of help from an artificial intelligence program to function.Googlealready has a fleet of these vehicles active in the state of California.

Google's next legislative goal in Nevada is to get its secondlawpassed, one that would allow drivers to text message while they are sitting in the driver's seat of one of these self driving cars. While this idea was introduced at the same time that AssemblyBillNo. 511 was, it has not made any significant progress at this point. Since these cars are not slated to be available to consumers for at least another seven years texting may not be an issue when the cars are released.
