Car manufacturers selling your location info and driving habits

im curous how much this is different from the data already being mined from the cell phones we all happily carry. When the report about GM selling driver data to insurance companies I went and looked through the privacy settings on my car, and half of them are tied to other convenience features that you kill off if you opt out of sharing the data. So you can turn the off but you lose features to do it

I did see some comments from subaru and toyota owners noting the same issue with removing functions by disabling the data collection. One claimed they found a fuse that supposedly stopped some data transfer, but then it killed off other functions of the car.
 
I belive with Toyota you can go to a website to put your car info in to be able to stop the collection of data. Not sure if it actually works or not.

A mechanic made a post saying the data is still collected, and he could supposedly see or access it despite the opting out. I don’t know if that’s true though.
 
im sure the car is still logging it somewhere. The consumer protections are a lot stricter in the EU than here though, the OEMs have to at least get active permission from you to collect the data in the EU. Probably buried deep in a terms of service agree box though. But they were clearly never prepared to protect all the data they were going to collect from us

Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin has sued GM and its subsidiary OnStar, alleging the automaker illegally sold driver data to third parties, who then provided it to insurers. The lawsuit accuses GM of deceiving consumers and profiting at their expense by allowing insurers to use this data to raise premiums or deny coverage.

:think: - I mean... everyone is listening and everyone is lining each others pockets. They don't care about the consumers.
