I do not have access to a micrometer. Does anyone know the diameter of the shift rod (the thing the shift knob screws on to)? I have an idea that might preclude having to use the zip tie to clean up the loose shift boot issue when mounting anew knob like the anvil.
The idea is to acquire a short length of black rubber tubing, or maybe surgical tubing, with an inside diameter equal to the outside diameter of the rod. Mount the tube on to the rod and slide it into the stock shift boot mounting clip, with the hope there would be a snug fit, thereby holding the shift boot in place on the rod. The length of the rubber tube could be adjusted so that it butts up against the bottom of the shift knob.
