Final Harry Potter film smashes US box office records

The final Harry Potter film is on course to smash all box office records as it opens in the US this weekend.

Initial reports on US ticket sales for the last Harry Potter film in the series had, on Friday, passed $80 million (£50m) - it was the most lucrative single day in the history of Hollywood.

In the last climactic confrontation between the forces of good and evil in the world of wizardry, there was already one clear victor – the studio.

Warner Bros said that Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 took $43.5 million for midnight showings on Thursday night and estimated its earnings as about another $40 million during the day on Friday, the website Deadline Hollywood reported. The previous biggest single day at the box office was set by Twilight Saga: New Moon with $72 million.

The film seemed certain to break the previous record for an opening three-day weekend in the US – the $158 million grossed by Dark Knight, the 2008 Batman movie. There were predictions that Harry Potter’s final on-screen adventures could have earned $180 million in the US by Sunday night, smashing pre-release estimates of $125-$150 million.

And as records tumbled, it was also on track to break the previous high for opening weekend takings outside the US – the $260 million for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – after reaping in an estimated $162.50 million in foreign cinemas by Friday night.

Earnings were bolstered by higher ticket prices for its first 3D version. "Records will fly out the window this weekend," a studio executive told Deadline Hollywood. "All 3D theatres sold out to excellent reactions."

Even before this phenomenal opening, the films based on the books by novelist JK Rowling were the largest-grossing franchise in history, with worldwide box office takings of $6.376 billion.

Ebert: Don’t Watch the New Harry Potter Flick in 3D

Roger Ebert dropped his reviewon the final Harry Potter movie, and guess what? He likes it! But there is one thing he doesn't really like: the 3D.
Anoriginal detractor of the technology, Ebert doesn't say that it ruins the film, he just found it completely unnecessary.

Note: This entire movie is dark, gloomy and filled with shadows. So it should be. That makes it particularly inappropriate for the additional dimness of 3-D. There are a few shots that benefit from 3-D (I like the unfolding of the little magical globe) but none that require it. Avoid the surcharge and see the film in proper 2-D with brighter color.

Well add another 22 bucks to the totals. Carol and I are going to tonight's 10:10 showing

I thought we would go today, but she will be at Dorney Park all day today with her sis.

I, the cripple, will stay home with the animals. :sadbanana:

never seen any of the harry potter movies just don't interest me... but i seem to be in the minority

I'm with you on that. I'm glad other people like it but there are much more interesting things out there to me (that generally aren't even in theatres).

Saw it today....was good. Never seen the theater so packed on a Sunday for the 1st showing.

I've found out that 99% of the time when I silently "boycott" a movie or series of movies, they end up being some of the best movies I've ever seen. I didn't see Avatar until I got it on Netflix in Bluray, which was probably a year and a half after it hit theaters. It is now easily one of my top 5 all-time favorite movies.

Usually if I was late in hearing about a movie, and everyone else jumps on the bandwagon before I do, I find myself disinterested in the movie. I think a lot of people are wired like me... I've never seen Star Wars (old or new), Twilight, Lord of the Rings... I could go on. Harry Potter is one of the ones I did go see, but then again I was one of the first people to actually sit down and read the first book (never read any of the others though). I can honestly say that this series of movies has been amazing. I'm 25 now, so basically I watched them all through my teens. Sad to see them ending.

One of these days I will go see all these other excellent movies I've never seen (if I can ever find the time).

nor do they or ANY other movies really interest me..

emma watson is not amused
