Ford asks Chevrolet, then NBC, to pull Silverado Super Bowl ad
Chevrolet is having some pointed fun with its apocalyptic Super Bowl ad featuring the Silverado called "2012," only the fun is pointed directly at Ford, which finds it a little too sharp to be all that much fun. So on the eve of the big game, Ford sent Chevy a cease-and-desist letter to pull the ad and "pressured" NBC not to run the commercial, according to a report on Yahoo!'s Motoramic blog.

Ford found no reason to chuckle at some of the commercial's claims, "particularly around durability." One in particular comes from a character that says of their now-deceased, F-150-driving pal, "Dave didn't drive the longest-lasting most dependable truck on the road. Dave drove a Ford."

Ford spokesman Mike Levine says his company has more trucks with 250,000-plus miles on the road than any other brand, which would appear to contradict the small print that appears in the "2012" ad that reads, "Dependability based on longevity: 1981-2011 full-size pickup registrations." Ford says its lawyers will decide what to do (if anything) after the ad airs during tonight's game, but Chevy's legal minions must have vetted the spot closely well before time.

Or Ford could take Chevy marketing honcho Joel Ewanick up on his offer and bide its time. Said Ewanick, "We can wait until the world ends, and if we need to, we will apologize."

That Camaro commercial with the kid graduating was 'meh'.

Giants Win Super Bowl, This Dude Wins $50K on Safety Prop Bet for Opening Score

The New York Football Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17 in Sunday’s nail-biting Super Bowl rematch. But the real winner tonight was a man identified on Twitter only as Jona.

After Super Bowl XLVI’s unusual opening score — a safety of Tom Brady — @BenjaminLyons tweeted that his friend Jona had made the best bet of the night. Unless this ticket can be proven to be fake, Jona bet $1,000 at 50-1 odds and made $50,000 for himself on the Patriots’ opening offensive play.

Considering how few safeties there have been in Super Bowl history (seven), and considering how Jona bet it for the first score of the game, the odds actually seem really low. But good on this dude anyway. That’s a really easy way to lose $1,000 quickly, but you gotta bet big to win big. Maybe Jona can go out and buy himself a pair of underwear that can properly support his huge set.

UPDATE: We spoke with Lyons via Twitter after the game, who says Jona had another winning ticket for $8,500 on just a safety, and that he won $90,000 total on the game.

Websites from Coke & Acura Went Down During Superbowl Due To Traffic
Websites from Coca-Cola, Acura and film Act of Valorcrashed Sunday night after being overwhelmed by Super Bowl ad-driven traffic. In Coke’s case, a Facebook app featuring animated polar bears in the ads buckled under the strain. On the other hand, Kia’s site had the most reliable, fastest performance of all Super Bowl advertisers Sunday night, according to Yottaa, a website optimization firm.

Yottaa monitored all the Super Bowl advertisers’ sites Sunday and found those three sites were the only ones that crashed. Coke’s site was down long enough for the company to put up a maintenance page.ActofValor.com, meanwhile, experienced at least six outages of five minutes. That site was also five times slower than average during the big game.

Meanwhile, Acura’s homepage was working, but a call-to-action link wasn’t. “With an ad spend of $3.5 million plus production costs for 30 seconds of a commercial, leaving visitors with a bad experience is not the way to launch a new car,” Bob Buffone, Yottaa co-founder and CTO wrote on the company’s blog.

Overall traffic to Super Bowl advertisers’ websites fell 6%. Buffone notes that “Amazon reports that a 100 millisecond delay on its website equates to a 1% drop in revenue.”
However, Buffone admits his pre-game predictions “sucked.” Buffone noted that “Cars.com, TaxACT.com, GoDaddy.com and History.com all fared really well during the Super Bowl.”
