Official Computer Talk Thread

"ASUS, which is well-known for ridiculously high prices, also announced a price hike recently, but Corsair is doing it sneakily. Increasing the price by $800 significantly diminishes the PC's value, and sadly, there is nothing anyone can do except call them out. Due to such reasons, we recommend users to build their own PCs by buying parts separately."

because buying the parts individually saves you so much money

Switched up our internet service with our local carrier today. I got a mailer last week advertising faster speed and lower price than what we had for the past couple years and it is not a one year promo price.

So now we have 1 gig service for $70 a month. Previously we had tier 3 of 4(1 being fastest) for $92 a month which showed a "speed test" of 600ish down and 20 up on a wired connection.

Also got a mesh wifi service that's included in the $70. So now I have the main mesh unit in the same spot the router was at previously and have a second unit on the other side of the house, closer to our bedroom. Hopefully that should solve a slow/no access on my phone when the wife and I were both using our phones in the bedroom.

This is what I just tested....not bad....

Shouldn't be on the phones in the bedroom ;)

I've given up on trying to extend my Wi-Fi to the cottage. I contacted my ISP and it will cost hundreds to run another fiber line so I'm stuck with running an Ethernet cable from the house to the cottage.
I could probably do it all myself. I'm just not a fan of drilling holes through walls.i did it once in my first house but it was old and shitty and I didn't care.

how far of a distance is it? Have you looked at outdoor access points? Something like this supports gigabit over the 5ghz channel. I don’t know what speed you need, but there are other versions at different speed ratings.

I'm a little worried that the signal won't be good enough using that. It has to go through two walls. The issue right now is the repeater doesn't work very well and she doesn't have a very good signal in the living room/kitchen even though it's a tiny area. The access point might be a lot better but I don't want to spend money to try it.

It's a straight shot to run a cable to the cottage and then just get a router. Or mesh. Or what ever it is telus uses .I'm not sure what the difference is.

So you have to bury a cable I’m assuming? Long distance? You’ll need to look for “direct burial” network cable if you’re doing it in the ground.

Yeah. There's a bunch on Amazon. I need to find one without the terminals on it so I can drill the smallest hole possible. Unfortunately I got rid of my termination tool for Ethernet when we moved. A lot of the cables advertise as not needing to be buried as well. But that's not ideal.
