Ski & Snowboard Thread

I'd definitely go to SLC. You have so many options within a very short commute. You have deer valley, park city, & the canyons all within like 5 minutes of one another. Drive another 30 min and you have snowbird, alta, solitude, brighton, ..... and even more if you drive about an hour out. If you can't find good skiing/boarding around there... something is wrong.

as for telluride, co - this view would be worth the trip alone

If you do go there, give yourself at least a day to adjust to the altitude. I have heard that some do not adjust well to being there. The town base is almost 9k feet above sea level, and the peak of the mountain goes to 12,570 ft.
 
I'm starting to see that SLC is the best choice. I looked into flights and it is the cheapest and most easily accessible for me. I think I'll stay in Park City like I was thinking and spend my time jumping around between The Canyons and Snowbird/Alta.
 
Nice. Can't wait to hear how it was for you. It's likely going to be our next week long ski destination... although Whistler is opening a couple of new lifts this season.. hmmm
 
I'm going to be getting a whole new skiing setup this year and I'll be upgrading my snowboard too, I'd like some recommendations if anyone has any.

I have a pair of Atomic race skis that I use when I feel like skiing fast and aggressive, my everyday pair are 4FRNT TNKs which are predominately park/pipe skis and are 112/86/108@175cm. I'm 6'0" tall and weigh 180 lbs.

I'm looking for an all-mountain twin tip ski that's a bit wider to use for powder days (I'll be bringing these skis to Park City with me where I plan on skiing a lot of off-piste conditions). They need to be versatile, able to make turns and go fast, able to hit the park, and still be a great powder ski.

My current choices:

2014 4FRNT Cody's - 126/100/122@179cm
2014 4FRNT Devastator's - 136/108/131@184cm
2014 Salomon Q-105's - 133/104/125@181cm

If any of you guys have experience with these skis or have other recommendations, please let me know.

For a snowboard, I'm looking to upgrade from what I have right now. Current setup is a 2011 Burton TWC Standard 158 Wide. It's got a super soft flex (rating of 2). It was a great board to start back into the sport and progress to a better rider, but now I'm looking for something that performs better. I'm looking for something similar to the skis, a good all mountain board, able to hit the park, maybe a powder day here or there. Something a little stiffer than what I have now, but not too stiff.

My current choice:

2014 Burton Custom 162 Wide

I haven't used those skis, but I've got a set of Rossignol Phantom 97s and they have been a great all around set of skis. I bought them so I could actually ski in powder effectively at Whistler, but they'd done fine on the crappy icy terrain out east as well. Any of those skis would be pretty effective at powder...
 
I'm so hyped for this season. I went to a localish mountain (Sunday River in Bethel, ME) this past weekend for opening day. Two trails open, but you had to ride up to mid-mountain and back down from mid-mountain on a separate chair as they didn't have top to bottom snow making yet. This weekend is supposed to be full mountain and around 6-8 trails, I'll be going again tomorrow! A few obligatory pictures:

I'm trying to get as much snowboarding in as possible before my trip to SLC in January, I'm confident with my skiing level, but I'd like to get my snowboarding level up there a bit more. I'll make sure to bring my GoPro with me tomorrow and snag some videos. This is the earliest I've ever been skiing/snowboarding and I love it!

I know, it's crazy. The locals told me they usually open around this time which is really impressive. Obviously the conditions aren't supreme, but it's skiing/boarding in early November, I'm not going to complain.
 
So jelleh of people with access to "fresh" powder. We get ice crystals here if not outright patches of ice :sadface: . So much so, I drive out in the middle of snow storms to go skiing :canada:. Gotta keep them edges sharp or else :bricks: .

Pretty similar conditions here in Maine usually. What you're seeing there is man-made. Normally conditions here are very hard pack groomers and/or ice. We very rarely have "powder". That's why I'm super excited to be going out West this year.
 
Ya, Quebec gets lots of snow, but it's very wet so super hard after its cold.
Family passes bought. Teaching my youngest, daughter (4 yrs old), how to ski this season.

I moved from the NE to Kentucky. It's about to be 70 here tomorrow or darn close to it. Predicted high is like 68.
 
.. but Whistler isn't in the Rockies :)

The snow is incredible at Whistler.. the coast mountain range gets a ton of wet snow, meaning the powder mid-mountain is much heavier than the drier powder at the top.. and then the base of the mountain is usually above freezing meaning you get spring skiing like conditions. It's pretty incredible the amount of variety you get there.
 
and a decent chance of rain on parts of the mountain from what I've heard
