Steering wheel leather upgrade

So I recently sat in a new wrx and a new challenger and loved the steering wheels. They were a smooth leather with bigger 10 and 2 notches. That got me wondering how hard it would be to rewrap my steering wheel with this kind of leather. Are there kits for this? Not even sure where to start, Google didn't really turn up any answers to my question either.
 
Comments on installation of the cover:

While this is the top of the line leather and quality made, it's not for people that don't have a knack for threading it onto the wheel.
It comes with a very durable thread and pre-punched holes to route the tread. It still needs to be tactfully installed(pun intended/not).
You will also be tested sewing over the swells.

The way I did the whole thing, was to thread though some holes and leave enough of a loop to get my fingers under the thread to pull tight and repeat always leaving loose loops ahead of my work.

You can see in my pictures how it ended up, and I haven't had any issues with it in about two years of use. If it were to break(the thread), I'd look at it as a sign to buy some more thread and re-sew the cover and make use of the cover stretching more on the second app.
 
Hmm that may be the way to go. I'm sure I could do it. Is there anything about replacing the leather on the steering wheel rather than just a cover?

Another thing "I" like more about covering as opposed replacing, is that it makes it a bigger grip in circumference, helps my longish fingers.

But in answer to your question, I don't know of any replacement packages.

that may be something @CollegeHillsHonda could answer. Is there much difference in the leather, or if it's literally the same quality/feel to the si wheel?

  • But....... Getting a custom shop that can show you leather that you can touch, and have them re do your leather on your wheel would be the way to go, as @webby said.

  • My guess is that after the hardware on the wheel is removed, then the leather on the wheel is probably glued, which they can remove clean the glue off and fit with their leather.

  • I'd try something local in your search, and if they do this a lot(preferably).
 
I dont know if it's that it's real leather or not. I honestly think it's fake leather. It's just that it's smooth to the touch, not textured like mine is. Makes it feel softer and higher end. The cars I've sat in so far that had this kind of leather on the steering wheel are the Dodge charger rt or challenger rt (2016) and the 2015 Subaru wrx. I'm sure there are more, those are just the ones I sat in. I'll take a picture tomorrow, I have to go to the Dodge dealership again anyways.

yeah I know exactly what you're wanting now. The replacement one I linked isn't going to be like that. A leather shop would be able to replicate that look though. Are there any auto upholstery shops around your area?
 
I'm not sure. I don't think so though. I may attempt it myself one day. Do you think I could get the same result with a cover/skin?
 
Personally, no. I've had one of the genuine Honda wraps. It was an improvement over a stock (non-leather) wheel, but it takes some effort to get it really good. You have to wrap it tight and get it positioned really good. It'll still look like a wrap with the stitching and any potential error on your part with positioning/how tight you wrap it/and how it sits around the steering controls. I think I wrapped mine 2 or 3 times until I was happy with how it looked.
 
Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. That it will still look like it was added on. It's not that I'm not happy with mine. Just the new steering wheels in the new chargers, challengers, and WRX's just feel higher quality. I'm trying to figure out how to up the interior quality of my car without spending a load of cash to do it. And im going to keep my car and pay it off, no getting a new car lol. Anyways I do appreciate the insight.
 
I don't think having some quality leather installed professionally would be that expensive, should at least ask around.

If they don't, ask if they know someone that can. By the way there's a bunch of places near you...... This one looked like it did most anything.
