FL most likely. Haven't ruled anything out yet but I was looking in Savannah also. Im down for driving to go driving though. Im really excited about the possibility of actually being able to get involved in motorsports since there seem to be a fair number of tracks down there.

How did you end up choosing the M3 over other options? Did you consider any other cars before this one? Other than the civic you replaced.

So why not something like an older vette? Loads of power for cheap. That's my curiosity. Why this platform.....

This. There are faster cars out there, but the e36 m3 chassis really is THAT good, and even tho newer m3s have been faster, many still see the e36 as the best m3 ever.

I remember reading an issue of car and driver back in the 90s and they picked the e36 m3 as the best handling car in the US, choosing it over all the exotics and true sports cars they tested. They weren't going only by quantifiable test numbers, but also by the way the cars talk to you and the way they feel when pushed hard. The e36 put up some pretty good numbers, especially considering the car was not built on a dedicated sports car chassis. But more importantly, it had the most accessible performance, meaning there was so much feedback in the chassis and it went about its business so well that even the most ham-fisted drivers could drive it at the limit and not feel like they were going to kill themselves. It also helped that it was less than half the cost of some of the other cars tested. If you're going purely by the performance numbers, it's true there are better cars for the money, but there's just something about the way e36 m3s move that make them awesome track cars. It's just too bad they have the US a detuned version when the Euro versions got over 300hp by the end of the e36's run.

Mikey covered that really well.

If you ride in a well setup e36 with good shocks, everything else feels rubbish in comparison. It's fast, easy to drive, cheap (relatively) and one of the best cars ever made.
If you come down to Atlanta let me know. I'm instructing at Road Atlanta next month and can take you out in another M3 (e36 with JRZ shocks).. and a few other times this year. I hope to next drive mine the weekend before the dragon meet at Road Atlanta, then I have a few bike events, then Sebring in October.

Also, power isn't everything. My car makes barely 240 at the wheels. I can walk circles around cars with 3x the power. Even with similar drivers, the ability to carry more speed through and out of the corner negates a lot of the power delta.

C5 vettes suck. Would rather donate a testicle than be stuck with one of those as a track nightmare.
