Honda to shift production schedules in North America

Honda is continuing to adjust its production schedules in the wake of the March 11 earthquake in Japan, and the shuffling will reportedly continue at U.S. plants as well.

The plan is to run full production shifts at U.S. facilities on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from May 9 through July 1, with a single eight-hour shift added for Thursdays. With the exception of Honda's Greensburg, Indiana plant, all U.S. facilities were running two shifts prior to parts shortages. Workers at these facilities reportedly won't feel the pinch of the abbreviated production schedules either, as they will have the choice of staying home or completing training without a pay penalty.

Honda spokesperson Ed Miller reportedly told Automotive News the reason for the shift is that it's more efficient to run operations that way. The automaker likely won't make any decisions about U.S. production beyond July 1 until the situation is more clear.

On Monday, Honda announced it was suspending June and July dealer orders for the CR-Z, Civic Hybrid,Fit, Acura TSX and Acura RL. Those vehicles are built in Japan, where shortages are still severe. At this point, the Japanese automaker is expecting operations to return to normal production before the end of the year.

This is all very bad news for Honda, and it's bad for consumers as well. It appears that Honda showrooms are likely to be very short on product for an extended period of time.

DEFINITELY feeling the pinch here. no doubt about it! :sadwavey:

i just secured a Fit Sport and an Insight EX on return trades from Tampa Honda Land and Honda of Fort Myers the past 2 days. you better BELIEVE i'm holding onto those bad boys. that and the 3 CR-Zs i currently have in inventory that are originally mine. anything w/ a leading "J" on the VIN plate has been on lockdown for awhile; and it appears that will continue!

As my status update conveys, I've yet to see a 2012 Civic coupe. I've been to two dealerships and neither had any. The production shortage is definitely apparent.

that's because they haven't been released yet. only the sedan is out currently. (DX (not on dealer lots) LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L NAVI)

the coupes and HFs are next to release. then the Si's, and finally the Hybrid. i wouldn't expect to see any Si's around 'til 4Q of 2011.

if you really and truly do want the car, i'd hold out hope on your factory order. considering you put down a deposit for a specific color/option you know you're gonna get it eventually... it's just a matter of time. i'm sure the Si would be arriving quicker had it not been for the natural disaster in Japan. but, the Si in general will likely be in high demand and very low availability for quite some time.

if it's not "gotta have it" i say ask for your deposit back
if it's absolutely nothing BUT "gotta have it" i say stay patient and hope for the best. :)

no no no Webby... sorry for the misunderstanding. i meant on-ground; seeing any Si's on dealer lots would be around the 4th quarter of 2011. i'm sure the orders will be available to request/take before that... it's just a matter of WHEN the order will be fulfilled produced and shipped the prospective Honda dealership.

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the coupes would be released the week after the sedans, and the Si's would be available the first week of May... :shady:

assuming that all was well in Japan (but we all know things have changed), yes that may be somewhat accurate. all of my sales team were told 2nd week in May (approx 6/15) would be when the coupes were released but not necessarily on-ground as a direct result to the unavailability of certain integral parts to produce the vehicles. Si's were listed as "TBD" but likely a few months off of that and probably not on-ground until 4th quarter.

this was an American Honda training rep btw that stated this information. when she came for the 2012 Civic Dealer Tour training session.

that said, yes we do show a couple of coupes on order w/ varying production dates, no Si coupes/sedans however.

LX - GA/GR Cool Mist Metallic / Gray
prodution date: 6/27-7/1 current --- 5/14-5/18 original

LX - GY/GR Polished Metal Metallic / Gray
prodution date: 6/20-6/24 current --- 5/9-5/13 orignal

EX - GY/GR Polished Metal Metallic / Gray
prodution date: 6/27-7/1 current --- 5/10-5/14 original

EX - WH/ST Taffeta White / Stone
prodution date: 6/14-6/18 current --- 5/8-5/12 original

EX-L - GY/GR Polished Metal / Gray leather
prodution date: 5/30-6/3 current --- 5/1-5/5 original

the EARLIEST i can expect or assume a coupe to arrive here @ HQ Honda on-ground would be mid-June. the earliest current production date is the EX-L coupe.

yeah and i'd venture a thought that's probably what most of the U.S. Honda dealers would see on their on-order status reports as well. :whiteflag:

that last EX-L NAVI is a sold unit btw. i online traded Coggin Honda of St. Augustine for it yesterday. i traded our Dyno Blue for their Polished Metal b/c it was a customer's color preference. hate to lose a DBP though. it's one HOT color now b/c it's no longer just Si-specific. :rantsmiley:

probably expecting that to get unloaded here about mid-June-ish.

hahaha thx, i think? :hiding:

heh, no really but it's how i get by on the slow days. there will be many until production recovers over the next 6 months or thereabouts... :paper:

i definitely enjoyed helping Webby and the site out at its outset regarding the pre-release photos of the '12 Civic. love it or hate it, the comments rained in. it was a fun experience and i don't mind in the least helping out the site on its newness spreading the good word. :D
