I saw and can't remember where some one mentioned staring off in 2nd, to keep it from gearing up sooner than they wanted, and with AT's being something new for me, I did a test for each gear.
1st stays in 1st; 2nd stays in 2nd(even when starting out from a dead stop, which I thought useful to be aware of, ie, slower start); D3 starts in 1st, and will go to 3rd but no higher; D starts in 1st and will go to 5th.

So for close tight turns we can count on 2nd to be a positive lock in that gear. 3rd is good to know we aren't wasting time in 4th, or 5th on some faster/longer areas.

But, the main thing is that we know 2nd doesn't start in 1st.

Auto trans is not the same as manual trans. Just keep it on "D".
Thanks! Like Clint said in Dirty Harry, "it's good to know your limitations".

How do you change gears in an automatic like that? Say your in 1 and want to change to 2 if its icy or whatever. Do you let off the gas and then switch like a manual? Or go to neutral first? When i drove an auto before my civic i never had the need to use the low gears, just curious.

This is my 1st AT, and have never driven it in slippery conditions yet, but I'd guess in snow etc. I'd do nothing more than just shift to the gear I want without trying to go to N(since there's no N between each gear). But, say I'm sitting still on ice, I'd put it in N till I'm ready to move, then as webby suggested, shift from N to 2nd to get moving.(I'd do the same thing with a manual, even 3rd..... but 3rd won't work that way with the AT because it will start in 1st, even with it in D3).
2nd is dedicated to stay in 2nd.
One thing about my AT system is that it will hold itself on a hill(going up) without having to hold the brake. So putting it in N on ice while sitting may or may not help or hurt anything.

It's A Fast Pig!
I think you can hit close to 70mph in second. The gear is very tall.

I made a post that I deleted. Sorry for the confusion Nix. I just read another post about running an Si in 3rd at 80. Not automatic tranny. 2nd in it tops at almost 50, not 70 like you said for auto.

I tried something while I was out this afternoon...... I stopped on a 30º hill(pointing up) and tried 1st, 2nd, 3D, and D....... It would hold the car in place in all the gears except 2nd(it would creep backwards)...... Just an FYI
