There's no secret way to get an alphabet to search by letter unfortunately. A lot of people are complaining about it if they have long lists of artists. Some claim it's faster over a flash drive, but it's the same situation.

Is your IPod jailbroken? If yes, go to Cydia and download the app NoAccessorySplash.
This will allow you to have full control of your iPod when it's connected. You can use the IPod to choose songs, plus it will show the album art and not the "Accessory Connected" screen.

Actually I'm not even sure if you can jailbreak a Classic. I have an iPod 4 and it was not difficult. There are many tutorials on Youtube. You will have to do some research about if it can be done.

You cannot jailbreak an iPod Classic because it does not run iOS. You can only jailbreak an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch.
Back to the original post, the iPod navigation in a Honda is terrible because you cannot jump to any part of the list. You have to tap the down arrow, one tap at a time. You can tap backwards from A and it will go to Z, but that does not help. Other manufacturers have done a better job with iPod integration. In my GFs Chevy, you can tap anywhere in the scroll bar and jump to that part of the list. In my Nissan, it has an A-Z button. I tap that and it displays a large letter on screen. Turn the tuning knob to go to any letter I want, then press Enter and it jumps to that part of the alphabet. When I had my Honda, I created various playlists of favorite artists because it was quicker to scroll through less playlist entries than all the artists on the iPod.

The Honda stereo or iMid will also display the album art from an iPod. My iPod was in the center console in the Honda, so I never looked at it.
