Just got two new Hondas and I'm not liking the bulk of carrying two keys with fobs built in. Im looking for ideas to keep it light.

If you have a set of keys like my mom, let's see those too!

I'm liking the idea of the switchblade style key fob, like the VW's have. They seem pretty easy to find on ebay. How do you get the key cut? Is that something a regular locksmith can cut or does Honda have to do it? These new key designs are weird.

it depends on the key and the dealership/locksmith. A lot of the ebay keys dont have the tightest manufacturing tolerances for the key blank, so while the dealer might be able to cut it the key ends up being too thick to fit in the locks on your car.

Honda dealers have the machines to cut the keys for sure, but some refuse to cut aftermarket keys. They also charge different rates to cut and program so shop around, ive seen as cheap as $20 and all the way up to 170 to cut and program a key.

Some hardware stores now have the proper machine to cut these keys, but it depends on your location.

These aftermarket keyfobs do not accept the stock key and electronics? Will they only take the electronics?

most of the ebay ones have you transfer the electronics from your stock key, you may have to also relocate the immobilizer transponder so that you can start your car without issue

none that will definitely work, the key i have is actually a OEM Acura RDX key that took a lot of custom work to get electronically functional, its possible that a swap like that with a 9th gen may be possible and easier but i dont know.

I believe people have had better luck with keys like this

How is it so cheap now? I remember those going for $40+ when they were introduced at the 8th.

I like your setup Dar-Dar. I may just do that. Never have problems with leaving it in your pocket and going through the washing machine?

Thanks. I don't like having a lot of things hanging on the ignition whenever I drive my car. Lol.

And no, I usually hang my keys or keep it on the living room table every time I get home.

I agree that the less hanging on the key the better.... If you're going to carry other stuff with your key, think differently "carry your key with the other stuff....... That means rig the ign. key on a quick release from your other and put it them in the tray, or keep them on a lanyard ........

Actually the set up you're using is fine...... just get a small quick release to add to one of your steel rings.

It looks like that other stuff/keys,etc. isn't even used untill you get home, so you could leave it in the car tray and carry the key without anything on it.
Any thing you try to carry on the car key is going to create a right angle so it won't feel comfortable in your pocket....... JSing

All I carry is the key with steel ring and those little plastic bar-code thingys for shopping discounts. I got into that habit from riding MC's so there's no dingle-dangles on my key.
