OK, here are the pics of my root cellar. The main part of my house was built around the mid 1800's, so I'm guessing this is about the same age.

Here is a view of the top at ground level. Some of you may recognize the tree and swing from pictures I posted in a previous thread. The little white dog is Archie, who is an American Eskimo that we rescued a few years ago.

I rebuilt these doors about 7 years ago out of cedar, and was able to reuse the existing hinges. The top is poured concrete, and has a date that was obviously scrawled into it before it had setup (near Archie's toys) that says 1947.

Archie says, "I aint going down there."

There are 10 steps down to a wet clay floor. The room is about 9'x10', and I have to tilt my head to stand in the middle where I guess it is nearly 6' high.

You can see the hooks in the ceiling where they would have hung anything that they did not want the mice to reach.

Here's a shot from the back of the room looking towards the steps.

It was very cool down there, and would have been really comfortable if there weren't so many spider webs I had to to knock down.

We don't use it for anything. It would probably be a great place to store wine if we were into that.

I suppose if there was a tornado coming, and we had enough warning, it would be a great place to hide. If there was an apocolypse, and we had to survive by growing our own food, it could be used again as a cold cellar.

I keep a hatchet next to the bed and since I live next to one of the great lakes, 5 min walk, I keep one of these water filters handy. Enough for a couple days to figure out what's next.

True, but it's a beast of a pump. Just drop the end of the hose into water pretty much anywhere and start pumping. You can drink it right away. It's insane. The water tastes decent too. The youtube videos of it are crazy. They drop it into a dirty pool of water in africa and just start drinking the stuff that comes out of the pump.

I've never seen that version. I've seen a bunch of straw type filters and whatnot, but not that one. You use it much? Heavy?

Nah it's not too heavy. Bought it when I thought I was going to be going mountain biking for days. Never happened. hahahah. Used it a few times. It's cool to show off mostly.
