Subaru FT-86 Concept named Subaru BRZ

"SUBARU BRZ". "BRZ" stands for "Boxer engine", "Rear-wheel drive" and "Zenith."

Subaru says that the name is an expression of confidence in the "Horizontally-Opposed Subaru Boxer engine."

Subaru BRZ pricing starts at $24,000
Journo-tweets from the Subaru BRZ's Japanese launch are offering up new insight on that half of the Subyota equation. Most specifically, pricing and options. The BRZ will reportedly start at around $24,000 and rise to $27,000 for the Limited model.

According to Twitter traffic, the BRZ will come in two levels of trim, the base-level — called, strangely, Premium — which includes navigation (yes, standard), eight-speaker audio, soft touch dash, limited-slip diff; leather-wrapped steering wheel (tilt-telescopic), shift knob and e-brake lever; six-speed manual; aluminum pedal covers and cruise control, among standard features.

The BRZ Limited model adds leather seats with Alcantara trim, fog lamps, rear deck spoiler, 17-inch rims and vented discs (16" front, 15" rear).

Subaru confirms turbocharged BRZ engine, doesn’t confirm turbocharged BRZ

According to Motor Trend editor-in-chief Ed Loh, Subaru has confirmed it will build a turbocharged version of its Toyota-direct-injection FA20 engine (the one in the Subaru BRZ). That's great news, right? Well, yes. Kind of.

Of course, Subaru has not yet confirmed it will build a corresponding turbocharged BRZ. But since the company has said the BRZ is the only car in its lineup slated to get the FA20 — for the time being — one can only assume that a turbocharged version will power that particular car, no? That's just straight logic. At least, you know, for the time being.

Subaru brz sti coming to Tokyo auto salon

Subaru itself will also be showcasing an upgraded Impreza called the G4 STI with all manner of performance enhancements, and will, at long last, announce its return to a number of different motorsport disciplines. The Super GT300-spec BRZ, which we already know about, will be displayed alongside the Legacy-based racer it replaces. But there will also be a WRX STI that's slated to be fielded at the Nürburgring 24, and Subaru will also be announcing its return to professional rally competition, though not the World Rally Championship series it left years ago, it will contest the Intercontinental Rally Challenge.

Scion just announced at the Detroit Auto Show they'd be allowing customers to sign up for a chance to be one of the original 86 buyers.

Just head over to scionfirst86.com on January 12th, 2012 at 12:00 pm (multiply those numbers and you get 86) to register. According to Scion VP Jack Hollis, there's no advantage to being the first to register as the drawing will be random.

Hollis also promised special gifts and deliveries for owners. This deal only applies to people within the United States.
