Definitely. Since the cams are moved by the crankshaft, there's efficiency loss in the engine. It's a great idea making a separate system that does not alter the engine's performance.

I can see hybrid engines hitting 80-100 mpgs with this.
 
I wonder how much Koenigsegg would charge to get my engine retrofitted? :D
 
Cool. I'm a little dubious about relying too much on electrical systems but it's a great idea.Definitely unlocks many possibilities with timing you're limited to with mechanical cams.

Reminds me of a project I did in 2006 trying to model the valve pressure in the aorta with a cammed motor or an electrical actuator. The duty cycling is so much easier, better, and more consistent with the electrical system until you lose power...or something breaks and
 
The same could be said about a pacemaker really. Batteries last so long.
 
I think Koenigsegg said that the Saab test car ran for 60,000 KM w/o any issues.

That's very cool. I would very much prefer a smaller engine that has a higher output than going all electric. Electric engines have torque but most are requiring fancy automatic transmissions.

To put it in perspective 40 years a go a 2.4 engine would not have been able to have what the Si has. As oil becomes more rare more efficient engines are the way to go. After all current engines use about one quarter of the energy from the fuel they burn.

This system, not only increases fuel efficiency, will also increase engine efficiency. Since there won't be a camshaft geared and belted to the engine, the engine does less work. So the free energy that is gained from the non-existent camshaft will go to the drive train. Meaning more power!

Very true. They also offload the pollution to electricity manufacturing. Batteries and electric cars have many advantages but far from environmentally clean.

Bro, this technology is going on a Koenigsegg. They are some of the absolute fastest most powerful cars on the planet. Also, efficiency=power.

This is incredibly exciting technology. I've been waiting for this to come out forever. It makes so much sense to control each valve individually.
