This system, not only increases fuel efficiency, will also increase engine efficiency. Since there won't be a camshaft geared and belted to the engine, the engine does less work. That's very cool. I would very much prefer a smaller engine that has a higher output than going all electric. Electric engines have torque but most are requiring fancy automatic transmissions.
To put it in perspective 40 years a go a 2.4 engine would not have been able to have what the Si has. As oil becomes more rare more efficient engines are the way to go. After all current engines use about one quarter of the energy from the fuel they burn.
