Anyone here a beer advocate?

Sometimes you can find really good Mead at wine stores that have craft beer. It's one of those odd categories that liquor stores stay away from but beer places can't carry. Depending on state laws. If you ever see anything in a ceramic/stone looking bottle from Dansk Mjod you have to try it.

They have a couple different varieties. It's very watery but extremely sweet and honey tasting. Lurgashalls is another decent one. I like the viking blod myself. It tastes of honey, hibiscus flower, and spices. The Klapojster is quite hoppy if you can find it.

I've always wanted to try mead. Dansk Mjod sounds familiar to me. I must have seen it somewhere :scratches:

I'm going to try and check out that store sometime this week. See what they have to offer.

Just got back from a friend's BBQ. I had 2 Sam Adams Boston Lager, 2 Blueberry Lagers, and 1 Belgian Session. I didn't like the Belgian Session, but the Blueberry lagers surprisingly tasted good.

All Sam Adams I'm assuming? Pretty sure those all come in the SA summer pack. I've never tried SA Belgian Session.. I've been wanting to though. I had the Blueberry Lager and was surprised by it. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Speaking of seasonal beer, only about two more weeks until the fall seasonal beer starts really showing up Nix

It seems like the fall beers are coming out earlier and earlier each year. SA Octoberfest is already starting to pop up in some places.

Yep. All Sam Adams. It was very surprising how good the blueberry lager tasted even though the idea sounds a bit odd.
 
I have to say, I like regular Sam, the Sam Winter Lager, and the Cherry Wheat. Everything else i've had from them I did not like.

I also have nothing good to say about Southern Tier Brewing. I know some people who think its just the best but i've hated all their beers that ive tried.

I look at Sams as a craft beer I can get anytime, anywhere. It will likely never disappoint me but at the same time I'm never expecting anything mind blowing.

Here's how I rate most of what I normally drink from them..
Boston Lager - a good lager. I don't drink many lagers but theirs I can respect. I'll drink it only if it's the only decent beer on draft
Summer Ale - average.Maybe slughtly below. Again, I'll likely only drink it if it's all a place has.
Lattitude 48 IPA - average
Whitewater IPA - below average. Not a fan.
Octoberfest - by far my favorite beer from SA. Easily one of their best.
Harvest Pumpkin Ale - pretty good. Not as good as some of the other pumpkin ales I've tried not bad at all.

Other than those, I've only had the rest of their beers once or twice here and there in variety packs.


And the only Southern Tier beer I think I've ever tried was an Oak Aged Unearthy IPA. I thought it was pretty good.. but then again I <3 imperial IPAs
 
Oh, and also speaking of Southern Tier, people rave about Pumpking. Have you had it Nix ? I have yet to. I'll probably give it ago this year.

Where do you rate the Blueberry?
 
Quite honestly, I think I would rather drink one than a Boston Lager, Summer Ale, or any of their IPAs. Maybe not on a regular basis, but at any one given time. If that makes any sense. It was one of those beers you don't expect anything at all from and was better than expected.
 
I still love the Boston Lager, but the Blueberry Hill Lager has got to be my favorite fruit beer.
 
I have not tried that one. Simply - I had such bad luck with their beers I just stay away now.

I've been hooked on the Rohrbachs Blueberry lately. It drinks so easy. I do feel worse though cause all their beer comes in 64oz growlers. They're half gallons. A pile of empty bottles I don't feel too bad about but when my empties start stacking up by the "gallon" its disconcerting.
 
It comes in growlers? Are they filled before hand or do they fill them as you buy them?


I didn't realize Rohrbachs was in Rochester. My aunt and uncle used to live up there. If they still did, I'd try it out.

You can swing by their brewhouse/pub and get it filled. Wegmans carries quite a few pre-filled on hand. I havent gotten a bad one yet and the stock seems to turn over very fast as they are often out of all of them!

The local beer store, called Beers of The World, fills them also but its a bit of a drive.

Ah, Wegmans. I remember going to those :giggle:

I believe the shelf life for a growler is about a month or so (if unopened), so if they do have a high turnover rate that makes sense that they could sell them like that.

There's nothing like a good growler fill though. I have two that I fill up on a regular basis with different local brews. My absolute favorite local brew is only available on draft, so growlers are my only option for me to able to drink it at home.
 
So I'm thirsty, and am thinking about trying out a blend of SN Pale Ale and SN Torpedo. I don't like the Torpedo much at all (not sure why I bought it) but am wondering what a 50/50 blend of the two would be like :think:

At the worst I'm wasting a pale ale. I could care less about the torpedo.

I've never tried any blends on my own.... might give it a go.
 
Well, I did it. I want to say I prefer this blend to either of the beers on their own. The hop note of the torpedo is distinct, but not overbearing like I find it to be regularly. Definitely not a bad blend at all.
