so the envelope/dvd weighs 1 ounce. 1 ounce is $1.56 first class mail one way. So with return shipping it'd be $3.12
If they somehow get around the rigid mailing rules for 1 ounce letters, it'd only be 44 cents one way, or 88 cents round trip. Normal postal rules state anything up to 1 ounce in a letter can be shipped for 44 cents in the US. But the letter/envelope must be able to bend to go through the sorting machines. A dvd obviously wouldn't be able to bend. Maybe they have some special arrangement with the post office. There is no way they could be paying 3+ dollars on every dvd they send out, if monthly fees are 8 dollars. (or nobody rents more than 1 movie a month). Those 40+ sorting facilities/labor costs aren't free.
