Ticking

Looser valves are better to a point (better than too tight anyways) - too tight and the valves may burn, you can have a rough idle bad enough that the CEL can come on with a misfire code. Too loose is noisy, cylinders may not fill or empty as desired. From what I've seen from 2012 Si's the valves come set tight from the factory. Another source of ticking can be the Purge Control Solenoid valve (pcs). It allows vapor stored in the canister to be recycled. Typically this operates when the engine is warm to hot - and its stupid loud.

Thanks for the response. Never even heard of the pcs valve, so will have to do some additional research to find the location on the engine. Will make it much easier to isolate the noise.
