Jane Richard, sister of 8-year-old boy slain in Boston Marathon bombing, gets new leg after attack

Sporting a toothy smile, little Jane Richard beams over her new prosthetic leg four months after tragically losing her big brother on the sidelines of the Boston Marathon.

Seven-year-old Jane and her family were watching the iconic race on April 15 on Boylston St. when two bombs exploded near the finish line. Martin Richard, 8, was one of three people killed in the terrorist attack. Jane’s mom, Denise, was gravely injured and Jane, 7, lost a leg.

The barrette-wearing, elementary schooler spent months in hospitals and has learned to walk — and even dance — with a prosthetic leg, her family says.

On their blog, the family says life without Martin hasn’t been easy, but they’ve been amazed by Jane’s progress.

“When she is able to have it on, she struts around on it with great pride and a total sense of accomplishment. Her strength, balance and comfort with the leg improve every day,” the undated update reads. “Watching her dance with her new leg, which has her weight primarily on the other leg, is absolutely priceless.”
