Some shots I just took with the new lens

All were taken with the Nikon D70 w/ 105mm Micro lens

I did more of a point and shoot as I don't know much about ISO and F settings. Critiques are welcome. Thanks

1st is very sharp focus & nice depth of field. If you're shooting in daylight, try to drop your ISO down to 100 or a low number. The lower the F stop, the more light is allowed into the lens. It also makes the depth of field (how much is in focus) smaller. The 1st pic shows that off. You can see certain parts of the flower are very focused, and parts further around the other side of the flower are out of focus. If you went with something like a f-stop of 5.6, 8 or higher...everything would be pretty much be in focus. You'd not have a blurry background. I don't know what F stop you had these set at, but it looks like you had it set pretty low. -That's not bad.

Here's another...was going to go for the slow shutter speed to make the waterfall look silky, but in the broad daylight, the pictures were pure white from exposure. So, I just purchased an ND filter to help me out on that.

if you upload your pictures to sites like photobucket or flickr instead of facebook the camera settings should be embedded and not cleared out. Facebook does all kinds of nasty compression and strips exif data. The data should still be intact on your original files and you can view them in the file properties in windows

when ive tried to take pictures like that i end up stacking a ND8 and a ND4, set the iso to 100, and close down the fstop as high as i can

Tomorrow morning I'm thinking of going to the beach for some sunrise shots. Any suggestions with settings and everything before I go?

Do I need the tripod or will me holding the camera be suffice enough?

if youre planning to drag the shutter and get the whole soft water look, definitely need the tripod

if you just want to shoot the sunrise handheld will probably be fine.

the usual take the iso to 100, adjust aperture to get the depth of field you want and adjust shutter to expose properly

To answer your question Webby...

The max aperture for most of those photos were between 3.3-3.8
The F-Stop - f/13
Exposure time - 1/2500 sec

Just realized it's a 105mm lens. That changes things a bit with depth of field depending on how close you are to the subject. You can use longer lenses/zoom lenses to get some of that depth of field look while still having the F stop higher. Something you can do is take the same picture numerous times. Change the fstop each time, and then look at how it changes the photos.

Looks like all of your flower photos have very high ISO. Lower that by a lot and you'll reduce the grains in your photos. The waterfall picture is nice. Is that intentional vignetting?
Also you don't need fast shutter speed for non moving objects, just fast enough for your lens.

Like every hobby there are books about it, I'd go to a book store and try to find a book that has tabs for quick finds and small enough to carry with you.....Kodak has some nice ones.

The vignetting was intentional for the waterfall shot. Figured I would mess around with some photoshop editing. That's another thing I need to brush up on with photography.
