Hi everyone...I've been noticing some staining on the aluminum portion of my shift knob.

Originally I believed it was most likely from my hand sweat due to the recent hi temperatures, but I don't think that is the case. I have tried cleaning it off but nothing seems to work.

Hoping someone here might have had this problem and found a solution or some experience with preventing it from getting worse.

Below is a picture of the discoloring knob:

Just guessing..... Maybe a clear coat coming off, or do you wear a ring that could be rubbing on it?

Is there someone else that drives your car? It looks like(from left to right) something struck/hit/touched it and bounced 2 - 3 bumps before it came to rest then slide as the pressure lifted.
As far as I can tell it was an outside force, as opposed to error in the manufacturer, although just like some cars body paint could be better so when something like this happens it should come out of it better.

Did something lay on it and rub it, or maybe the sun/heat hitting something on top of it while it was parked.

It definitely looks like something physically marred it.

Maybe something on your hand/skin - some chemical.

It does look like something scuffed or rubbed against it...anyone know what material it's made of? Stainless?

man, the numbers on my skunk2 knob are melting off

Same with mine but I have an Icb motorsports one. I don't wear a ring or anything and no one else drives my car. I guess it's either cheaply made or I have some oily *** hands or something lol

If its aluminum you can try to remove the stains with lemon juice. It's possible you could make it worse so carefully try some on a q-tip on the very edge and see if it helps.
