Waves glow blue in California due to algae

Beach-goers in Southern California are being treated to a rare light show with waves there glowing bright blue as the crash at night.

The rare phenomena is caused by the presence of a bio-luminescent algae called Lingulodinium polyedrum.

During the day this means the water at San Diego-area beaches appear a brownish red, but at night they look a whole lot more magical.

Boffins say movement of the water causes each organism to flash blue with a chemical reaction - when this happens billions of times as each wave crashes, you get the blue glow.

Black light and certain bands of hi-liters. Take the ink tube, or whatever you want to call it out. Dump it into a jar of water. Let the ink sit in there for a while and turn on black light. Endless glow. Pink and yellow were the best I've seen.

I remember watching an interview with a WWII fighter pilot saying he could see a trailing glow in the water at night generated by their carriers' movement, which he could actually follow to track down the ship.

So this kind of thing is not necessarily unusual.

Back in 2006 we messed with neon green algae in North Carolina late one night. A few of us had a few drinks too many and wanted to look at the algae late one night. Good Times!
