Does anyone think a box could be built up under the factory sub location and then replaced with a Jl audio 8 inch? Seem like an interesting idea. Although when I was looking the mating surface seems irregular but it could work..

The cross braces for the trunk lid would be in the way.

@squiggy what do you mean by the cross braces?

I'm seeing the JL 8w3 sub has free air resonance freq. could it work in factory location with out a box? Besides the pain of installing it but is this the one that is a direct fit??

I don't have a good picture, so this one will have to do. The two bars highlighted run underneath the two rear speakers (why you need shallow mounts) and just around the basket for the sub (which is why trying to find one that fits is very difficult). They run the full width of the trunk lid and aid in opening and closing it.

Ohhh I understand. I'm playing with the idea on a free air sub .

I don't know if the 8th and 9th gen rear decks are the same but I found this:

"ZR800 driver fit without any modifications. With the 8w3, I had to enlarge the hole, but did not need to remove the torsion bars. I never permanently mounted the 8w3 though, as using it as IB was horrible as I indicated"

His experience with the open air 8w3 in the 8 Gen was horrible it's meant for ported and sealed set ups.

He said the zr800 was good for what he needed it for. He used it for a year. It is advertised as a component speaker or a bass diver in a box or in open air configuration.

These were on the factory amp.

He said he used a 1/8 in. Wood baffle and just redrilled some holes. Is that what you mean? I'm not expert when it comes to car audio and installation.
