so what exactly does a mesh network do?

Gives you additional WiFi access points that are all under the same SSID and let you seamlessly switch between access points as you move through the house to the one that gives you the best reception. Just lets you cover a larger area than you otherwise would have with a single WiFi router and doesn't have the annoying characteristic of adding network SSIDs like a lot of access points did. Overall, you get better coverage and maintain higher download/upload speeds throughout your coverage area and eliminates any low zones or dead spots.

So my modem and router is one unit, would I still be able to use a mesh network? I've been told the AT&T fiber doesn't like having other routers connected.

The ones I have can be attached as access points connected to the main router/modem or can be operated as a router and access points.

The main mesh unit would plug into your current router/modem. Then you place additional nodes around the house. You input your current WiFi credentials and stuff into the mesh nodes and they just extend your signal to other parts of the house.

Actually removed it from the network and reset it last night. PM me and we'll hash out details.
It's a little funky how things get set up when you have a router in place already. The best thing to do would be to set your current unit up to pass through the WAN IP. Essentially it will only act as a modem and the router function will be disabled as the Google Wifi will handle that. Otherwise you'll be in a Double NAT situation which isn't good if you have anything set up for Port forwarding such as a gaming console. The other option is to let your current router continue providing the routing services and only use the Google Wifi in bridge mode, but that kinda defeats the purpose as you'll no longer be able to utilize the mesh functionality.
That's actually why I'm getting rid of my second one. I finally switched over to using it in Bridge mode (I virtualize my router and firewall) so the second unit is pretty useless now.

Yesterday I bought a new HP pulled it right out of the box with a bad hard drive. I took it back to the exchange where I bought it and they swapped it for the HP Omen.

Damn! that sucks it was DOA. Just wouldn't boot or the SSD wasn't showing in the BIOS?

It would not boot up at all it was stuck on the F2 page. At the end of it I guess it worked out for the better I really like this computer I got over the other one.

actually I should have mentioned, if you actually navigate to - https://9thcivic.com/forum/ it should work for you. The server change last week broke the old ssl cert. There are a just a number of images and things hard coded that have been in the works to update. Some urls may show it's not https until it's all "fixed" and redirects changed. Also, it will show broken https when users upload images into threads if they aren't posting them from https hosting sites. Otherwise, it should function for you. It just isn't forcing people to the S site on all urls until they're all working properly.
Interesting. I see exactly what you mean. That's why I never noticed it. I have a secure connection in a majority of threads. Even down to some pages of the same thread show secure, but then the next page of that same thread doesn't.

if you have a link to a page it's doing that, let me know. It could be from someone loading a signature or other image in the page from a site that isn't https, but I'd need to see it.
Yeah, it's the signatures. Every occurrence I've noticed I find an element on the page that's http and it's been the sig every time. (Or old pages of threads that have broken http photobucket links.)
