Second Japan Nuke Site Shutdown Puts Auto Industry in Deeper Peril

The Japanese government has requested that a key nuclear energy plant located in a region full of automotive industry production to shut down its reactors in order to put safety measures in place in the event of another earthquake or tsunami. The power company, Chubu Electric Power Co, agreed to shut down two of its reactors, and was confirmed by Reuters.

The latest plant to be shut down is located in Hamaoka, central Japan, triggering concern by Toyota, Suzuki and Mitsubishi due to their reliance on the power plant. At this time, however, automakers have not yet been able to produce or release a full assessment of the situation. Although still unconfirmed, it is possible that the latest plant shutdown will reduce output of Japanese automakers even further, and potentially reach global automakers as well if additional supply chains are caught up in the region.

Following the latest shutdown, Japan’s nuclear power output is running at just 37.6 percent of its total capacity.
